Hello All,

I have just bought a Freelander from 1999 1.8 here in Hollland. With some work off-course. Removed the visco as it was / is broken.

now I am checking the HDC, When i start the car, the HDC bruns green on the dash. I checked on the forum but acnnot find an answer

When I use the switch for the HDC nothing happens, I took it appart and connected the wires but also no light burning than.....

the wires look fine and not broken. I do not have an owners manual for the excact function. But should the light burn when it is in free mode, so not in the 1st gear? Or does it not work when the viso is disconnected from the car?

any idea where I can look further?
Many thanks

when the switch is on, the green light should flash in every gear except 1st and reverse. in 1st and reverse, the light should be on permanently.

:welcome2:

If you remove the connector from the HDC switch, and short the connector, does the HDC light come on? As Optimus says, it should flash in all gears except 1st and reverse. In these gears it should be on.

I had problems with my HDC switch and simply replaced the gearstick switch with a simple push-on push-off switch of my own - works fine!

This is the description from the RAVE manual. It might help you.

And to confirm, hill descent is a brakes only system so it will work with the VCU removed from the car.

I disconnected the plug, and made a connection with the two cables. No lights burning....

The cables within the gear area look fine, need to check later f I have any voltage at all on the cables.

Doe the cables run to the dash or to the engine compartment? so I can check the cables.

any help is appreciated.

thanks
chris

I jjst see that the amber light should light up as a check when you start the engine? Is that correct?

as that is not happening at mine..... I only get the Green light when starting the engine...

could this be a fuse? or worse????

also seems there is a short somewhere if the green light is on all the time. check the connections to the abs ecu, first and reverse gear switches and the brake light relay.

Thanks Chaser,

the green HDC on does not stay on all the time. It only lights up with the start of the engine just like the TR and ABS etc, Abs stays on a bit longer till I have driven about 200 meters and than it goes of.

so that seems to work all ok....

Should only the green HDC burn with starting up or should I also see a amber HDC light with strat up? As I see no Amber HDC light when I start the engine.

OK I misunderstood.

Yes the amber HDC warning lamp should illuminate during the ignition on bulb check, it could simply be a bulb failure. They can be replaced from behind the instrument cluster. The other possibility is the bulb has been removed to disguise a fault with HDC operation.

If the amber warning light turns out to be on permanently after bulb replacement then a fault code should be stored in the ABS ECU but it will mean a costly trip to a LR workshop to interrogate it so it is still advisable to check those items I mentioned and their wiring.

checked it and there was no bulb placed, after placing off course the light burns

howver it stays on, so they probably took it out for a reason.....

Could this be the brake switch under the brake ? or abs sensors? But if it would be the abs sensors, the abs light should stay on right? and this is not the case

still need to check if I have any voltage at the plug at the gear-stick

I don't think it can be the brake pedal switch on your vehicle.
It could be a faulty brake light relay or faulty first or reverse gear switch on the gearbox.

Thanks again Chaser,

checked the cable and I have voltage at the gear knob, so that is all OK.

the brake lights work properly. Where can I find the relai from the brakes?

and are the gear switches easy accesable?

by the way, the riverse lights switch on when I put it on revrese? so that switch cannt be broken...

Agreed, but if for example the first gear switch is stuck on then the ecu will register an implausible gear position signal. The brake lamp relay is in the passenger compartment fuse box.

Guys I m new member on this forum and I want to ask you one questinon with similar problem with HDC on my Freelander

I have Land Rover Freelande 2.0 TD 1999 year and when engine is started all the lights goes off only the orange light for HDC stay on.
All the thinks working properly-brake lights, reverse lights all is ok but I feel that the car is little blocked somethink like the HDC is on and ABS blocking wheel.

Thank you.

I buyed my freelander 2003 1,8 petrol 8 days ago. 4 days ago the HDC amber lamp started to illuminate, AND a click-sound appared as I pushed the break pedal in. I have not activated the HDC-system. Any Idea?
