Whens bristol and west ?


And what was yours made out of again, had we decided on box or plate, off into town tomorrow to get some angle iron for making mounts with so will see how much they want just cba searching the fb convo :p
 
Box for the main part with a bit of plate for the side/towbar defensive back piece!!
It's in like 5 weeks dude :p
 
Did some more today but the 7018's just wouldn't light up!

Even put them in the oven to see if they were slightly damp and still wouldn't!……..They shouldn't be as they were left in the boiler room next to the boiler on a high shelf……….so taking them back to the shop tomorrow and gonna see if they were just a bad batch (I did pull a couple out the box and the flux was cracking)

Only difference between today and yesterday was the amperage setting, was using high volts yesterday and used low volts today so I could get higher amps

So 6013's had to do which was fine as there were no structural welds just the trim pieces on the side and a couple of caps, my stick welds are slowly getting prettier :D




This is a bit of an ugly one and it was stop start yesterday with the 7018 but theres no slag inclusions so its all good :D

So I covered this with a 6013………..you can see where the breaker tripped and I had to
reset it before carrying on with the caps

Again a little cap over the 7018's before grinding down nice and smooth, the slag chipped off easy enough (this is post chip/pre clean with wire brush so theres a few bits you can see knocking about)

You can see again where the breaker tripped so after resetting I needed to re do the end of the weld after a quick grind

nothing wrong with the welding rod Doc. Just the person welding with them. Not set up right or experience is all. Just give it time

Looked at your pics are you using 7018 ac/dc rod or straight 7018 rod?
Remember you are using ac not dc for welding.
heat looks a little high and you are moving to fast slow down a bit. when you get to the end of your weld hold the puddle a bit and let the crater(stop) fill in

Strange thing is I was welding fine with the 7018's yesterday and they were lighting up nice and easy but today they'd just spark then die, put the 6013's in instead and no problems, pulled one of the baked rods out of the oven and tried that and it still didn't light up properly

It is the person not the rod. take them back to the store and they will have a good laugh at your expense

I'll give them another go tomorrow on some scrap but they just didn't want to light up today………may try it on high volts tomorrow and see if it makes difference
 
nout wrong with earths, same as they were yesterday and earth was probably 6" away from the part I was welding as I was just sliding it up and down the box section as I was yesterday when they were running, it seemed like the metal was melting but the flux wasn't as the couple of times it sparked up and welded for a few seconds the metal had burnt up about 5mm inside the flux and just left a hollow tube

Ground at welder is a nice big copper lug with brass bolts and I tightened that up properly, cables are the original 1960 ones though so could probably do with being replaced :rolleyes: but they're still welding fine with the 6013's
 
Well the welds it was putting down yesterday weren't porous and today the flux definitely didn't seem damp, the one that was freshly baked at 250* for a good half hour didn't do anything

At a loss with these so will see if it was just an off day………if it turns out it doesn't work I'll just use 6013's for the rest, all the structural ones on the centre section are done now
 
Shoved them in the oven, pilot lights on all the time so gonna keep it warm enough to drive off moisture

Probably about 30 degrees in there when pilots on so will give them a shot tomorrow
