P38 Issue. Granted I haven't used the Range Rover for nearly 3 weeks but she has been hooked up to a trickle charger. Anyway today I had the chance to take her out for a drive but some thing seems to be a miss. When I opened the drivers door the first thing I got was "bong bong", put the key in turned the ignition on and got "Alternator Fault" she started up regardless of the message and seemed to drive ok with the wipers on headlamps on stereo on. My drive lasted for about and hour and everything seemed to be ok until I came to stop. As soon as I put it in park and pulled the hand brake up I got another "bong". Turned her off got out and noticed the display said something like "ignition key still in" but it wasn't. Went to lock the car and nothing, pressed the unlock button and that worked but nothing when I press the lock button.
I've got to go out and pick up daughter up again later so will see what it does then.
It all seems bit of a mystery to me, any suggestions??

ignition barrel is sticking in. it does/did it on mine
just wiggle the tip of the key in the slot till it pops out.

then get some graphite lube in there.

+1 for theGraphite lube or contact cleaner down the barrel not WD40 though.

run a pencil up and down key a few times then use it, works in the short time until you can get graphite lube

IIRC the keyfob won't lock the doors while you have the "key in ignition" warning. That happened to me once.

thats what happened to me outside the post office. wouldnt lock on the buttons. had to lock it with the key, came back and opened it, put key in and had "engine disabled" message. thinking "OH ****! NOW WHAT", pulled the key out and in desperation pressed the unlock button. door buttons clicked, put key in and away it started. ever since then i always just give it a little wiggle as i fetch it out of the hole. even with the graphite spray in it, just in case.

once again, P stands for PARANOID!

Alternator fault usually means what it say's.

Or a battery that's not up to the job.

Not likely, the fault message is triggered by the lack of voltage reversal on the D+. Low battery usually pulls a Gearbox Fault message.

graphite paste worked a treat thank you. What's that stuff supposed to be used for?

Its good stuff. High temp lubricant and glaze. I use it on old cast iron fireplaces/stoves. Oh, and for p38 ignitions of course.
