Hey guys.

I broke down with a minor electrical problem a couple of weeks ago and called out the AA. After much bashing with a mallet (putting plenty of dents in several components) the AA chap decided that he couldn't do anything and that he needed to tow me to a garage. He towed me 15 miles or so to the nearest garage where they fixed the fault. On leaving the garage I suddenly lost all power to the wheels even though the engine was revving. I ****ed about with the gears and transfer box and eventually got power back. I drove home (about 100miles) and just as I reached my street the gears went mental! I was basically stuck in 3rd gear even though the gear stick was acting like it was changing gear.
I managed to crawl to a garage about a week later. They are telling me that my gearbox is shot and I need a new one which they're saying is going to cost me about £900.
Now all this seems like a bit of a coincidence considering that I had the gearbox stripped and some selector arms replaced last year.

Can anyone give me some advice on whether the tow was to blame and if 900 quid seems reasonable.

Firstly...if it started playing up at the garage, you should have left it there, not drive 100 miles home, you have no chance of proving it was the AA or the garage now.

Secondly, if thats a new gearbox including fitting its a damn good price. usually 8 hours labour + vat..so thats at least £500 at an indie garage, probably a grand labour at Land Rover.
 
funnily enough a famous independant rung me up to day with similar issue ,where about is the vehicle
 
Storm 99: I was about 2 miles from the garage when it happened and I did call them out, but when it started working again I though it was just one of those random temperamental landy things and went on my way.

not same garage then , either grub screw has come loose under gear stick turret or other fault on top selector shaft and yoke on internal selector shaft ,or selector shaft pin has pulled between selector forks , id be surprised if a major internal fault had occured leaving 3rd gear ,anything is possible whats oil like clean or full of debris ,how didgears go mental ?

Gears didn't actually go "mental" :)
It felt like I was changing gears (through the stick). But when starting from a standstill it would stall in what was meant to be first and second (like trying to start in a high gear), neutral felt like third (its a V8 so you can head off in 3rd and get up to about 30), reverse disappeared, 3rd & 4th would just crunch. I didn't try 5th.

I have very little mechanical knowledge ( I know this is terrible for a landy owner) so I didn't get to look at the gearbox oil. I could ask the mechanic though. They're not a landy specialist so could be getting things wrong....

what gearbox is it an lt85 0r r380 or lt77 different issues with lt85 than i previousl said where do you put stick for reverse
 
LT77 then..make sure u get a defender one, not the disco, unless you like changing gear by reaching behind you...good one, £150-200 off fleabay.
 
not r380 then if lt85 it could need removing as forks are prone to wear leaving gear still selected while stick moves ,but the jaws stick selects with are secured with roll pins these can break if lt77 as previous post
 
All they did was take me out of gear and then tow me on the flat with a bar. No A frame or anything like that. It was pretty hairy doing about 40mph 6ft behind a van with no visibility.
 
You might want to re-title this thread ''The AA fecked my 110 but I can't prove a thing''
 
towing on all four wheels won't have done any damage. it's only if the front wheels have been lifted, that the rear prop needs to be disconnected. as you were on a solid bar it's not like you were going to run into the back of him or anything. All yu had to do was steer???

Re: "all you had to do was steer". It was dark, I had no lights, all I could see was the back of his van, speeding down unknown windy country roads.
You may be made of tougher stuff than me :cool2:, but I had white knuckles and a sweat on by the end of it :eek:
