most modern cars are 10 times better than cars of 40 years ago, particularly with regard to corrosion resistance, body dipping etc. It isnt rocket science.

I can remember my father telling me that in his youth, car engines had to be rebuilt every 60000 miles and decoked every 20000. when was the last time you had to decoke yours?

Post 3 and Post 15.

I have welded pretty much all of em, and there is no doubt in my mind, and none in the minds of anyone else I know that has done the same.
I dont believe it
You are saying that of all car manufacturers in the world, including indian, chinese, etc... they have all upped their game and improved the steel, preparation techniques and coating technology except for LR, who are the only users of Indian low grade steel and have deliberately refused to better their manufacturing techniques?

Don't believe it then, no skin off my nose. I aint a fairy, not going to die cos you don't believe in me! :D

If you want to see poor grade steel and nonexistent rust protection, have a look at Nissan Navaras, their chassis rust from the inside out and snap just behind the cab. They are so bad Nissan are buying hundreds back and scrapping them.

Has the quality of steel used for the chassis degraded over the years? I was passing some time this morning and looking at a 2013 90 defender and the chassis has definitely got quite a bit of rust (also considering its only done 27000 km). When I compare it to my 1997 110 which was properly abused by the police (over 250000km - ex croatian border police) and my 2000 TD5 90 this new one must have been made from ****tier steel.

Just curious. Anyone in the know?
There's difference between 1999 td5 and 2001 td5 lot of difference and tdci scrap is worse

I was talking to a chap at kelmarsh who did restorations and he said he had to replace the wing and the old battered wing was twice the thickness of the new one
Every car is getting better rustproofing nowadays but th steel/aluminium is much thinner and of cheaper quality to keep costs down and weight

I had a 2 year old mk1 escort in the Mid 1970's. The floor didn't rust but the edge of the boot lid and bonnet did, also the top suspension mounts. Volvo led the way in the 70's by galvanising their vehicle body's. I know this sounds mad but I often wonder if the products owners use in an attempt to prevent corrosion actually promote it. I attended the Newbury classic car show yesterday. There was many fantastic cars form days gone by, all in fantastic condition, including many fords from the 70's and a few old vauxalls. Having talked to a few of the proud owners, there was one thing in common, none of the cars saw any use except attending car shows and only then if it was sunny. So that is the answer, lock your landy in a nice warm garage and never drive it again.
