Have read a thread on a similar post to this one but problem seems to be different.

The first morning start of my 1998 TD4 is difficult. I ensure the glo light goes off before starting but it always takes more than 4 attempts to get it going. Once it has run, for the rest of the day it fires up very quickly first time. During the attempts to get it going, it throws out a lot of smoke and when if finally gets going a bloody great cloud wonders off down the street. Starting is more difficult when the temperature is lower but as I live in Sydney Australia, everything is relative. If it is circa 6-10 degrees, then the problem is at its worst.

Any thoughts, I've recently had the injectors renewed for a seperate problme (didnt make any difference).

Cheers

Have you changed the glow plugs ?

My next port of call would be the fuel pumps or fuel pressure regulator as if it fires after 4 attempts it seems like its taking its time to build suffiecient fuel pressure and until it does the engine is taking in what it can (but not enough) and when it does fire you are getting plumes of smoke as all of a sudden fuel pressure builds to the correct level and away it goes burning off the excess.

Besides the problem but either the year or the engine is wrong ??? Don't think Td4's existed in 1998 ??

sounds like wot the zip say's but i would check glow plugs first as that is typical of one not working. . . .un best oh luck earthling :) :) :)

See my siggy below...Also check for leaky/perished pipework leading to injectors, and injectors themselves...
