I have a Discovery 2 td5 from 2003 and have brake problems.
2 months ago i had the 3 aminos problem. When i read the fault code with my nanocom it Said there was a problem with my abs shuttle valve switch. I replaced it and the 3 amigos where gone but since then i have no abs when i brake hard. That didn’t Bother me too much but today when i was driving my brake pedal got realy hard when braking. Now this is actually dangereuses because not only becomes the brake pedal hard, also does he not brake like he should brake. the car brakes but realy bad.
I think it happens when i brake when the pedal is normal and when i let go of the brake and immidiatly brake again thats when the pedal goes hard. I Always had this problem ever since i bought the car a year ago but only when driving backwords but today when driving normal i did not felt save after having this problem.

can someone help me out here ?

Sounds like the brake servo or the exhauster* or pipework is kaput - start engine with foot on pedal - if pedal goes down, then servo is working... if not, check system for vacuum, and holding it ....

* = AKA "vacuum pump" <- in quotes cos, of course, such a thing does not exist - though it gets called this often :rolleyes: :confused: o_O

Thanks for your reaction! I Will try it tomorrow if the pedal goes down when starting, i know it did that a while ago but cant remember if it still does now

You obviously have two problems, I agree with @Disco1BFG about the possibility of a servo problem, but I am also surprised that the 3 amigos haven't come back on to do with the ABS.
Does Nanocom not say anything about all this?
Cannot help but feel there might be some link.
Could it possibly be a bleeding problem? Do all 4 wheels brake properly, or as properly as they can?
Hope you sort it out as it sounds very worrying.

Hi thanks for your reply! I havent been able yet to try disco1bfg idea with the brake pedal because I’m on a hiking weekend. I do have my nanocom with me So i Will try to read codes again on the abs section. For me all the brakes work properly together. Its not when i brake hard the car goes to the right or the left. I did change my brake discs and pads on the front 2 weeks ago but I can’t remember if my abs worked with my old ones. I’m doubting if the abs stopped working when I changed the shuttle valve switch or when I changed my brakes 2 weeks ago… maybe this evening I will check the things you guys recommend to try but if not I will definitely try it tomorrow!
 
I seem to remember that the brake servo gets it's vacuum from the alternator some how?
My servo stopped working when my oil pump bolt snapped and I drove 1/4 mile home. There's an oil feed to the alternator so must be some connection.

Hi, Just to add to the advice in the second post -before starting the engine press the pedal several times untill it goes hard - then start engine with foot on pedal and you should fell it go down slightly.

So today I tried some things. The pedal goes down when starting but I do seem te remember that the pedal went in faster with a cracking feeling on the brake pedal when starting the engine maybe 2 months ago or I don’t know how long but now it’s softer and slower when I start the car. I also did a test drive to look for a pattern maybe and my conclusion is is that when I brake normally and I let go of the pedal and immidiatly brake again the pedal goes hard and car does not brake good anymore and when I brake again for the 3th time shortly after, the pedal becomes almost not pushable. When I drive a short while again the brake pedal feels normal again.

Yes but my alternator is new since 2 months or so so that would seem weird :/

This indicates that you do have some vacuum but are losing it quickly and it is not being immediately replenished. Maybe a split in a hose or the diaphragm in the servo?

And changing the alternator isn't changing the vacuum pump. They are just driven off the same shaft.
Unless they were both changed at the same time.

I didn't bother looking into it once mine started working again but from what you are saying you can change these separately?

Having researched it a bit, I guess you are right as no one seems to flog the vacuum bit separately. If you were lucky you might be able to get a scrap alternator where the vacuum bit is OK and dismantle separate and fit. Most of the money must be in the alternator, so the vacuum bit ought to be cheap as chips.
so I reckon you could do it, but you'd need to source the parts which is the major part of the problem. :(:(

I couldn't see it available separately either, but then I didn't look too much.
 
When I had to replace my alternator a couple of weeks back I found them (alternators) without the vacuum pump (you just use your old one) but as you say there are no pumps available separately, so I now have a spare pump !
