There's been a few threads about this sort of thing lately. It's common on coil sprung landies. Do a search for more info but it's nowt to worry about imo.
 
sorry it's taken a while to reply, i only get on the computer when i'm at work, it's 1991 200 Tdi, only just passed the 100,000 miles
 
you checked the suspension turret on the bonet to make sure it aint snapped and the shockie popped up? am just throwing guesses in here bud.
 
it could be fatigue in the metal as the driver side on most cars carries the only person in the car most of the time, therefore has more weight on it, is the tyre softer than the others? mine used to be lopsided until i lifted it.
