So I got in the car after work and it wouldnt start. Tried bumping it to no avail. Then tried jumping it and that didnt work either. Called the AA out and he diagnosed it to being a bad earth (some bodged job meant it had welded itself in position) of which he fixed. Then I tried to pull away and the handbrake wouldnt release. Luckily he was still there and tried to smack it off with a hammer but that didn't work. So just waiting for a tow truck now. I read on another forum that this happened to someone else. What will I need to do next and is it an easy fix?

Cheers

After doing a bit more research it looks like the bad earth has caused the handbrake cable to act as an earth and weld itself in place. Oh well, when I actually get it towed home which if the AA didnt mess up would have been tonight I will have a proper look.

Cut your handbrake cable, (remove centre console, all of it) and replace, simple enough jobby :)

Then replace battery earth to chassis cable, then change starter earth too :)

Could also, try just cleaning up the ends of the cables if the cables themselves seem in fine condition :)

Hi serg,

You may as well take the drum off shoes out and have good clean out n replace the bits as well as all the moving parts. Just remember not to tighten the handbrake too much once back togeter. I did this and got stuck on a steep hill when testing the brake....lol
AA call out lol.

Gave the drum a good clean. Only issue was I had a 200tdi cable and turns out I have a 300tdi box. Sourced another one and all is good now.
