Hey guys im embarrassed asking this question but how do you remove the handbrake so I can get my seatbox out? Ive taken the 2 bolts out holding handbrake to seatbox but how does the cable come out?

thanks oh 1998 300tdi!

remove the pin, lubricate the rubber poking out of lever bracket and pull cable out rearwards, sometimes you may need to assist rubber with a screw driver, warning lamp wire should have a join under the seat box above t/box

Hint, remember the lube that JM mentions,

or when you are under the motor trying to pull the cable out of the back of the seatbox it will suddenly let go and you may well end up punching yourself in the face, ( do noot ask how I found this out)

Bet that hurt :boxing:

Still cant get it out! the brake cable has a sheath on it so cant pull it! do I need to loosen any of the hand brake mechanism?

The rubber bit JM is talking about is attached to the cable adjuster which is attached to the cable sheath. The whole lot pulls out as one, just pull the cable sheath back (with enough force) and the whole lot will come free

Pants the cable comes out as an assy, the whole thing including the grommet and sheafing is removed as one piece.

thiis runs from the handbrake handle lever attachment point to the transmission brake drum .

should be a case of remove the pin that attaches the cable to the lever , then just remove the cable as an assy from the back / underneath of the seatbox, cable will sgtill be attached to the transmission brake drum.

Section 70 of the defender 300tdi workshop manualexplains it well.

Cheers

its easier i find to unbolt lever assembly pull all the cable you can through to the footwell, lube the rubber and pull/twist

Hey guys finally got the handbrake out! Thanks! Next which a forgot about is the black box that sits inside the battery box? What is it and how do I remove the wire? I thought removing the 4 bolts I would be able to get inside the box but its riveted closed.

If you drill / grind the rivets out then the base plate will come off. inside there is a plastic box (the immobiliser) which has an electrical connector that you can unplug. That may be enough to let you get the connector through the grommet. While that box is out slide the circuit board out and check all the solder joints on the relays, they are a common failure point (dry joints) and can give intermittent start or fuel so re-solder if they look dodgy. Once you have finished just reassemble and pop rivet the case back together.
