I've a handbrake problem on my 06 defender. The lever seems to have lost it's return spring action...the brake comes off OK but the lever seems floppy and springs up, illuminating the warning light (although the brake does not come on)
I've had a look but the cable just goes into a drum. There's an adjuster but I don't think it's adjustment as it happened suddenly.

Might be a silly question (but Im a non mechanical type person who is keen to learn) how did you free it up? The exact same is currently happening to mine......also 06 plate TD5

It may be the cable thats sticking but more likley to be the expander in the drum,to sort it disconect rear prop, remove brakedrum and blast the expander with plenty of brake cleaner to remove old brake dust and crud.[if someone moves the hand brake as you do this you will see how it works and help clean it out] replace drum and prop then adjust until tight. With one rear wheel jacked up back off adjuster until drum turns with ease.

Best thing to do is remove the cable , look for cracks and rust marks in the plastic outer covering ( best to replace if you see this as it will happen again ) , attack it with WD 40 and keep working the cable in and out till its nice and free . Failing that mate just replace the cable .

You'll have to pull back the boot around the base of the HB leaver to get to the end of the cable ( 2 plastic jobbys if i remember right ) and 2 locking nuts underneath .
