I've done a bit of searching and can't find this issue.

A couple of years ago I had the usual issue of the back breaks not really working at all, including the hand break not holding her on any sort of incline. These were freed up and all was good. I'd be surprised if this is the issue again as this is different and the handbrake is holding her fine.

My problem is that the leaver isn't sitting quite home, when released it drops, but i have to push it home, it goes fully down bit lifts slightly with any movement and triggers the break light. Its as if a spring somewhere has broken, doesn't seam like its going to fully lift and engage, but slightly worrying all the same. I'm going to lift the centre console to have a look, but has this happened to anyone before? Any suggestions what it could be?

I would suggest taking the disc drum off cleaning it out of brake dust, at the same time check the expanders on both brakes if at all rusty either clean off and grease or exchanged for new ones,

I suspect it's a cable that has seized up. Take the rear cover off the centre console and look at cables going into the compensator. If one cable is much longer than the other, then that cable has seized.

as nodge68 says hand break cables they are not hard to do I would renew both at the same time

Thanks for all the input! Yeah all of the above makes sense, shall look at the cables, expanders and clean inside the drums.

I used to have access to an online parts list (including explodes) for my last car (Peugeot) so i could get official part numbers quickly, does anyone have a link for the same for a freelander? I suspect i'm going to have to buy new cables and possably more...

Try this, but do check the VIN numbers . Plus you may find some numbers are superceded.

Nodge you have just answered a question was going to post. My daughters TD4 equaliser is a you describe and was thinking the same! Cheers....

Just what I was looking for, found the part I needed to recon my IRD, a collapsible spacer part TXT100020 @£15 but its been superseded to part IEA500010 which is a full kit at @ £200

lol, you need to buy the IEA... part before it is superseded to a whole IRD !

Doing a Google, they are available quite a bit cheaper than £200 though.
