how's this...sitting at the lights with the handbrake on the other day and as usual the handbrake lever leaning on the side of my leg. I've leaned my leg against it and 'twang!' THE BRAKE'S COME OFF! now it won't stay on, I can feel the ratchet but it just flops back down. Have I broken it? :(

remove the center seat panel and have a look ,over time there gets too much play in lever and pawl can drop of the edge

I would suspect here that the tooth of the ratchet pawl is broken off - seen that one before. Answer to that is a new ratchet pawl, or of you're like me a trip to the model engineering workshop a nd a new pawl made from tool steel... :)

You might want to get the whole thing apart before you order parts, as the spring/shaft/knob may require renewal depending on how rusty it is and how much effort you need to put into getting it apart.

Thanks lads, i'll have a look...soon as I've changed the master cylinder-the service brakes have gone tits as well! Coincidence or what!!

OK It's shagged. I was thinking of an upgrade here, what if you could fit a dash mounted cable handbrake like on a Merc vito ? then you ain't got that bloody lever pressing your leg all the time. I might make something up unless someone else has been on this 'journey' and can enlighten me as to what handbrake setup can be cannibalised.....?
