Would anyone see a reason to NOT use black Hammerite spray to seal the underbody/chassis? I know its more expensive than Wayoil but i feel would be longer lasting and more effective.

It chips when stones hit it, so its not really more effective. I did an axle with it, sanded it down to bare metal, primed it and gave it a coat of Hammerite, within a month it was chipped and rusting again. Sanded it down a bit, and sprayed it with waxoyle. Still looking good to this day.

I was once looking at buying a SIII which had been FILLED with old injun oil, but not before the guy had put bungs in every large hole in the bottom, side and top of his chassis and sealed up any seams that were liable to leak.

The thing was STUFFED with it, he removed one of the bungs slightly and oil poured down the side. He reckoned it needed redoing every now and again so that it didn't become a water trap.

Certainly brought a whole new meaning to checking the oil!

where th fook has this innocent hammerite based thread gone!!massive bollocks, bondage clowns!!vengeful gettin handfuls of waxoyl rubbed into his cock!!BACK TO THE HAMMERITE!!;)

I didn't know that! bollocks, I'm no good at finding holes! I'll never find em all, I'm lucky enough to have found em on the missus

Most of the stuff is **** mate, and google old engine oil coz it seems to make matters worse.

Plenty threads here on rust aswel.

Yeah ,but most things are better than nothing.

Every time a 'painting my chassis' fred comes up (about once a month) no-one agrees & everyone has a different opinion and we ain't protective coating specialists.

For what it's worth, I went over mine with one of them 'twisted' wire brushes fitted to me grinder, it was a fekin filthy unpleasant job. I then brushed on two coats of red oxide primer and a top coat of black garage door paint.

Once the paint cured I spray waxoyled any bits I couldn't get at with a brush & did the best job I could of getting waxoyl into all the chassis holes to coat the inside of the rails, crossmembers and outriggers.

I did mask off all my brake pipes as I've heard of MOT failures because of not being able to check the pipes for corrosion because of being painted.

It looks good & only time will tell if it adds any longevity to the life of me already 28 y/o chassis.

You pay your money, you take your choice & as I said, almost anything is better than nothing. ;)

Old engine oil makes matters worse? i would have thought it would have provided ultimate protection

What about new engine oil? I know I know, pouring new oil into a chassis is a waste, but buy cheap ****e from Halfrauds!

I spent ages on google looking for something and dont think it works.

I had a mk 2 escort years ago with a lotus engine and I sprayed old engine oil on it. Everywhere I went it left traces on the ground, them rainbows things, and in some places where the water got to it from the road where it pooled, it turned to white mush.

Wife made me sell it so dont know if it helped but I doubt it, but there are bits on google where guys tried it and it dunt work.

Do a good research before you put anything on.
