I not one to grumble…. Because I don't have to because my IRD is maybe a serial ‘grumbled’…
Decided I needed to check the oil as I removed the VCU a couple do three months ago…
Anyhoo checked I had the right gear oil.. 75 W 90 GL-5 … hell yeah… but only 600 ml.. FACK!
Another ‘anyhoo’ and I decided to drain the oil and check it.. (it’s okay only changed in before laying up the car for a rebuild and welding bonanza…) and I could reuse a bit of it and order some more(off to work tomoz) so will use it to go to work tomoz and sort it properly next week.
Noted that the drain plug was leaking.. and the under tray had residue on it.. from the IRD. ‘Doing this just in time’ flashed through my mind.. removed the full plug, all good. Although elevated at the front it took about 4 mins before a drop of oil weeped from there.. the ‘smugness’ was reaching epic proportions at this point.. placed a oil pan under the best spot to drain and rested it onto the partially dropped under tray. Removing the drain plug revealed a black sludge like substance on the magnet…about 3mm of it.. although black in appearance there were greyish flecks(minute sizes) throughout.. ‘normal wear’ I think!
Dropping the oil it seems a bit dark. Shining a LED torch through it revealed us one dark ‘whisps’ although that may have been residue in the pain.. the oil didn’t look too back, a honey colour…
When drained I the used a 200ml syringe and a hand pump pipe(cut down) as a nozzle extension. Drawing the new fluid out of the gear oil bottle revealed a clear and slightly yellowish liquid.. so my old oil was toast… but not good toast!
The difference was significant.. and obviously something was happening in the IRD..
Once I had added all the new gear oil I started to draw the old oil from the pan… some a mixed in the syringe and side beside.. the old oil again looked completely ‘shot’..
First job when I get home will be to get the oils and new stuff out and replace the lot with new..
Been pricing up the bearing and seal rebuild kit.. I will be doing this soonest I think..
Cheers..
