Hi

I had an hour spare yesterday so I tried to stop the landrover grey smoking. I moved the pump both ways but not much change. I asked my old man and he said do it with the engine running and I got a pair of plumbers pliers and moved the pump with the engine running. Now there is no smoke at all you would not know it was running apart from the noise. These old guys know there stuff about these old machines I know my Dad has had old landrovers in the past, so I'm learning as much as I can from him. It also gives him something to do.

Cheers steve

Someone'll be along in a minute saying not to do it that way as its possible to fracture the injector pipes

I did it the way you did by gently levering it across with a pry bar with the engine running :D Makes all the difference with a well set up pump :)

That's stage 1 of the tuning done :D

Stage 2 is getting the fuel delivery and running speeds set, as they will give you better economy than you ever dreamed of with a Landy ;) ;)

If you are lucky, your dad might even be able to help you with that.

Some of us might be old, but we were brought up without elctrckery gadgets and did most things by touch, smell and sound!

Old sea dog, would you be able to describe how you tune up the 2.5 to get better economy? Seenyou say it a few times but I've never asked how to do it haha

Dead easy :)

First you set the idle to a bit faster than it is, and the you adjust the fuel delivery until the idle is what it was, and then you adjust the delivery amount so that you are not running rich, and then you keep on doing it until your injun sounds and smells right.

Simple innit? :D

I'll give it a go and let you know:)

For me the key to good running turned out to be injector pressures. I had mine refurbished and it was not a lot better, still smoked a bit. A friend has an injector test pump, we set the injectors to 135 bar down from 150 to 165 from the refurbished setting!!. A tweak with pump timing and it pulled well no smoke under normal use and only a slight amount under really heavy load. Consistent 28/29 mpg around local roads and 30/31 on longer runs. All this was on a carefully rebuilt engine.
Then I had one of those offers you can't refuse and sold it. Looking for a series one now.

We'll started it again today and it smokes for 30 seconds then back to nothing and no smoke under driving well not much.

Changing the dash over weekend if the wife gives me the thumbs up. And if not home brewing instead. Not got time for both home brewing is taking over the landrover.

apart from putting a strain on the pump it would retard timing a little at 160 bar:eek:
