Ive done this to a fair few BMW's with great results in the past and seeing as it's basically the same cluster so thought I'd give it a go.

Here's how it looked before I started:



a few during shots:



the problem stems from these rubber pieces, you can see where they have become indented where they apply pressure to the ribbon onto the contacts on the pcb



The fix Ive done before and did agian this time was to remove the Rubber pieces and place a piece of card behind them to bulk them up.

Here's a pic of the card down in the gaps where the rubber sits:



All back together:



Back in the car (a bit gutting 1 line out in the external temp):




I'll whip it back out to have another go when I do the MID, With the MID I'll fit a new ribbon as I've had a go in the past with them and never had much luck repairing them any other way.

I have up with my MID unit
So ended up fitting a whole new aftermarket stereo in place lol

well done,i got my kit from akspeedo today
 
I done mine a few years back. My mate helped me out, he took charge of the head unit while I done the speedo, fiddly you say! Mines went ok, no missing pix but the head unit has a "bruise" on the far left. Good job mate
