My TD5 is spraying out Diesel from just infront of the tank on the dirvers side when the engine is running, it will have to go to the garage in the morning to go up on the ramps and have the fuel line looked at.

Can anyone offer any reassuarance that this won't be a major problem to sort. I'm hoping its a matter of a pipe or connector to replace. There doesn't seem to be any lack of power so there's plenty reaching the engine but there plenty decorating the road so its going no where until its sorted.

Really regretting 'trading up' from a faultless 100K mile 300Tdi to this 70K mile TD5 that is a source of expense and stress. Thinking of getting shut of it once this problem is sorted.

First thing I would do is to have a look at the fuel filter. You can clearly see it in the offside rear wheel arch, just back of the wheel.

If it looks or feels like it's got diesl on it, this is possibly where the leak is. Try screwing it in a bit more and that might close off the leak.
 
If its not the filter, then it will probably be a chaffed fuel line from the filter to the tank.

I paid £ 56.00 for a complete set from Land Rover, and it took me a hour and a half to change them.

sounds about right 50 pence, the fuel filter looks fine and the 'water fall' when the engine is running is just infront of the fuel tank so faulty fuel line looks to be the case, I know the fuel could be taking an odd route to flow out but its clearly not originating at the filter.

whip open the hatch in the center under the carpet in the boot.
this is where the fuel pump lives.

There should be 4 pipes going into it, they are colour coded so you can afford to remove them and clean if needed (take a photo for reference for the order) they just snap into place, if they have misalligned, it maybe spraying diesel from there, you could try running the engine and risk spraying your entire interior with diesel!!!
 
this is a common problem on the td5 discos the fuel lines can rub and cause the leak when fitting new ones make sure they are routed and fixed well or you could have the same problem within 15,000 miles as said the set of pipes (4 i think) cost about £55
 
Just had to have mine done as it was suffering from exactly the same problem.65000 miles on a 52 plate.

Garage dropped the tank to replace the lines and (hopefully) set them up so they won't chafe again (at least in my time!)

Theres a local Landrover guy near me who rekons he can do them without having the tank out.

Its actually the wires to the water sensor that chaff into the fuel pipe.
 
The question is do I drive the mile the garage now I know its spraying the road with diesel, I think I have stump up for them collecting it rather than decorate the road with an oil slick.
 
well exactly, its a moral thing seeing as I didn't know I was doing it this morning leaving a rainbow trail in the rain on the road all the way to my house.
 
My Disco td5 did exactly that.

Accessed top of tank.
No trace of fuel leak.

Pumped 90 litres of fuel into jerry cans.
Disconnected fuel lines and wires.
Dropped half of the towbar.

Dropped the tank.

Checked the plastic fuel lines and one of them was rubbed through on the sheathing of an electric cable cover. Cut twice with sharp knife to remove the rubbed inch of pipe, shoved the ends into a 8mm inline pushfit connector (Boy! I was pleased to find one of those in my box!) Re-routed leccy cable and added felt protection to stop it happening again. Fitted tank and towbar, pumped fuel back in, job done. About two hours and 10p for the connector.

Had the same on my 51 plate 80K miles TD5.
Local Landy-fixer told me that it was a fuel pipe on top of thre filter. Cost me £90 to have the job done.

Understood that this was a Discovery recall in the past and that the pipe stretched and eventually broke with the vehicle sidewas movement. Replacement has a 'coiled' section to allow for movement.

Then had to replace a unit between the front bulkhead and the back of the engine- also p*****g diesel onto the tarmac

Garage found the leak where the return pipe bends over the chassis near the tank, he replaced the damaged section in a few minutes but recommends a new pipe for longer term security- he doesn't expect the repair to fail as its low pressure but better to be safe. Interestingly he was onto my gear box problem super fast too (crunch 1st-2nd when engine thoroughly warmed), saying before I could mention what this forum had also said, that he will drop the oil and fill up with ATF and thinks that will fix it- he's an old timer and has seen it on similar big boxes on things like Rover SD1s over the years so a big thumbs up to the local back street garage!
 
Brilliant, and, Roy, dare I ask what the bill was on top of the parts?

My village 4x4 specialist did it. Dropped tank and replaced pipes. Asked him to loosen the nuts on the exhaust system which were corroded and replaced all the little bolts on the cross-members with stainless allen-heads to make it easire to remove when the time comes.

Total bill 178 beer tokens.:eek:

tried to see if I could go through the boot way but it looked like I had to remove half the interior fittings to lift the carpet.:(
