Hi

I was wondering whether anybody could give me some advice please?

For a while I have had an intermittent gurgling noise like running water when I stop my 53 Land Rover Discovery V8 LPG. Thought nothing of it and read on here that this sound could be an air lock.

Yesterday I did a short run and got stuck for about 5 mins at a junction. I noticed that the temp garage was at max so limped home. Stuff had flew out of coolant tank and was all a bit of a mess.

This morning topped up with a bit of water, but there is a hill as a I come out of village. Temp went to max again. So turned and came home.

Checked oil and no gunk or gunge so hoping not gasket
Checking for leaks but nothing obvious

What what you recommend next?

I am hoping to work through the issues systematically, but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Gurgling noise is air trapped in the heater matrix, so if a 3.9 just drain the coolent and refill slowly all should be ok, 3.5s can sometimes give a problem. Also replace the coolent res cap it maybe iffy

Many thanks Tuskar

How do I check whether there is an air lock or water pump failure?
Head Gasket unsure how to check this. Done the well written about gunk test and hoses are not hard.

Advice appreciated

If it sounds like you have someone smoking a bong under your bonnet, then check for airlock, see if all the radiator is an even heat, if a bit of it is stone cold could be an airlock? :D

Could I thank you all for your very prompt and helpful responses. They are very much appreciated and I hope to be able to help out others one day.

If anyone needs any help or advise about secondary education please let me know

Regards

Change the water pump and thermostat as a pair, also, check that the anti air-lock bleed pipe and the tiny stainless steel needle in the header tank aren't blocked.

The pipe comes from the top right-hand side of the radiator, runs under the fan cowl and up the side of the battery box to the header tank.

The needle is moulded into the header tank, if it is blocked, an airline will often blow debris out of it.

You can just see the needle through the header tank filler cap.

Its sole function is to bleed air out of the top of the radiator top tank and prevent it being recirculated back into the engine.

Many thanks for your advice.

Interestingly I was looking at how to get rid of air locks... thought I would start simple. I started the engine and the removed the coolant screw cap. I gave the pipes a squeeze ( unsure why .. ) I then took it around the block... 5 to 10 mins and then returned and then gently released the cap again to allow air to be released. I then tightened the cap.

The car did not overheat over this small run and temp stayed where it should be in middle.

Unsure whether it has solved problem though

Think I will try draining the coolant next
