Hello, Advice please.

P38. DSE. 1998

I have a binding rear N/S brake. Can anybody tell me how the guide pins are removed. I have looked in Rave and it just says remove guide pins: are they screwed into place or what. Is there a drawing or picture anywhere. Can they be removed from the carrier whilst it is still on the axle, after removing the caliper to one side.

All suggestions appreciated.

Best to undo the two bolts securing the carrier and remove it for easier access on the bench. The guide pins are round, with three flats machined along the length. They are a sliding fit in the carrier bore which is round, the pins get seized into their bores due to rust and dirt build up despite having a rubber boot fitted. Put plenty of penetrating oil in the bores and let them stand overnight. The head of the pin has two flats on it, clamp the head of the pin in a vice and twist the carrier backwards and forwards to try and free it, hopefully the pin will free itself and both the shank of the pin and the bore of the carrier can be cleaned up until the pin is free to turn and slide. Give the pin a good coat of copper grease and reassemble.
This is quite a common problem and worst case scenario is a new carrier- complete with pins, part no. STC1907 @ £30.83 + VAT or replacement pin kit STC1910 @ £8.30 + VAT

Thank you Irish Rover, so the guide pin is not screwed in but a push/drive fit/

:behindsofa:

It's a sliding fit, not a push or press fit, it should turn and slide freely but not sloppy
The two flats on the head are to stop it rotating when you tighten the securing bolt.
