Dear all

A bit of back ground.....

LHD defender 130 single cab TD5 with motorhome converstion.

Total weight 2500 KG.

2006, 125000 Kms.

Of note undertook 2009 rally to Australia from the UK.

The problem......

Only recently (last 1500 KM) when I turn LEFT and get a distinct grumbing sound, it sounds central and to thr rear of the engine.

I get nothing at all when I turn RIGHT.

It appears to be speed related, the faster I go the loader the grumble.

To be sure something is wearing out, what would be the first place to look? what would I be looking for?

I could of course just take it to the local dealer, but whats the fun in that AND continental 4 x 4 shops are of the charts expensive.

It could be a wheel bearing, jack up each of the off side wheels and give them a spin, if one is knackered you will be able to hear / feel it.

Same symptom I had with a wheel bearing. As above.

I hear grumbling coming from the left hand side of the car towards the passenger seat. It doesn't stop; infact I hear it in both my cars.

"don't go so fast, don't go so slow, what time will you be home tonight, why haven't you cut the grass........." non stop!!

I would like to change the broken record, sorry these broken part for a new one but I suspect within a couple of years the new one will be as bad as the current part.

Plan your journeys so you only need to turn right then.

Another vote for wheel bearing here.

I will attempt to plan for right hand turn journeys only AND check the bearings as soon as I can

I afraid the consistant noise coming from the passanger seat area is a globally well known issue, try going on a four month rally to Australia, believe me the tune may change i.e watch out for that pig/child/snake (no I am not kidding) but it is ever constant and cannot be resolved.........ever!

Its not the wheel bearings, I have rotated the wheels as well with no change, I do notice a very small amount of play in both wheels but its not the bearings its the track rod, can that be the cause? an equal amount of play in both wheels and a light knocking when the wheels are lifted and force applied

I now also notice a single light tap sound coming from the front left wheel area when I break, its a single tap, not speed or breaking intensity related, my first thought was the caliper was loose but not so.

could the track rod need attention and be causing both faults?

I'd still suspect the wheel bearings. It doesn't really make sense that the ball joints would cause a grumbling.

Don't get me wrong, they might be fecked to, but I'd change the bearings anyway. You don't really want them to fail.

If you Jack up the wheel, try rocking it side to side, and then top to bottom. Any play means change the bearings.

The rocking top to bottom shouldnt cause the ball joints to move, so should show you if its the bearings.

Changing the bearings isn't a difficult job, you will need a 52mm socket and torque wrench and grease. And don't forget to order new lock tab washers and hub gaskets when you order the bearings.

There's loads of utube videos of that sort of thing if you're not sure how to do it. And the land rover manuals are good also.
