Very little will return until after the UJ's have been greased again. The old grease, that's squeezed out of the joint by the new grease going in, gets flung off. A lot of it does look like grease rather than oil and it's only on the one side of the box. I'll give it a good wash and see if it returns.
That is one of the cleanest Land Rover boxes I have ever seen.I've just started looking at getting the gearbox ready for fitting to the new chassis and to say it needs a good clean is a bit of an understatement! But why is it so badly covered in oil/grease? Anywhere I should be looking to track down the source? It's an LT77.

That's so clean it almost seems a shame to use it! I'll give mine a good scrub at the very least, but I'm not sure it's going to end up looking like that.As above, that's a remarkably clean LT77. Gunk, a scrubbing brush and steam works very well on gearboxes...
