Hi all, please help. I have a problem with my 2005 Freelander Td4 which has done 86k miles (yep, amnother one!!)

I'm getting loads of blue smoke from exhaust when cold and the engine is very lumpy at start. I also get an annoying judder through the car at 2500 revs (really noticable around 60mph in 5th especially bad uphill). Over 2500 revs its fine - cruises really smooth at 70+ mph and power is good. The engine also feels lumpy when I accelerate through the gears. Feels a bit like a miss fire?

Just had a major service and all filters replaced and wheels all balanced. Have tried to sort out problem by fitting new low pressure fuel pump, injector wiring loom, crank case vent valve and fuel pressure regulator which has improved performance but I still get the judder & loads of blue smoke.
Any suggestions as to what this could be would be appreciated.

cheers, Gary

Hey Gary,
I feel your pain! Unfortunately i don't have the answer but desperate to find it. I have so far replaced crankcase vent valve, fuel filter and injectors. Mine is a 06 2.0ltr TD4 and starts fine but very smokey (grey/blue) and smells like excess fuel, the engine shudders as if mis-firing accross all cylinders. Happens when cold or left for a couple of hours but drives ok.

No Dtc's logged and fuel pressure (high and low) , I'm told, is within parameters.
It used to cut out sometimes when you apply the accelerator immediately after starting from cold but this has improved with injectors done. Original but recondition injectors fitted back as i had borrowed the new ones for diagnostic attempt.
If anyone has the answer please
HELP!!!!!!!!!
Thanks
Sully

It sounds to me like the inner CVjoints (inner driveshafts) need replacing.

Blue smoke is engine oil. White smoke is unburned diesel. Black smoke is overfuelling. You possibly have a more fundamental problem if its blowing blue smoke. Indicates a worn engine either pistons or valve gear which is associated with the lumpy running.
