Have you checked the fan belt for the power steering pump, if slack might not be pumping (goes with the moaning) enough fluid in the steering system.
by the way mine does the same at low revs and the belt is a tad slack.
so another job on the list.

mine groans as well and just recently had a new belt etc. just figured it was normal as when i was looking to buy a disco every one that i drove did the same lol.

I have a disco that had the groaning noise. But it looks like I have stopped it after finding the ball joints on the track rod had excessive play in the one fixed to the shaft then to add insult to injury the drag link was in the same condition so I replaced both rods and so far it is all quiet up the front.

I had the rods replaced when the tracking was done, it groaned before and still groans after. Does anyone actually know what actually causes it?

Hi E&I,
Can have many causes. Most common is low Power Steering fluid level or air in the system, so eliminate those first.

Hi guy`s, my disco td5 2001 groans as well, I asked the garage where i got it and also an independant Landrover specialist and they both said the same, apparantly the pipes are harnessed to the body work and due to the pressure in the pipes this echoes/vibrates areas of the body/chassis which makes it sound really loud, i kind of settled with this explanation and put up with it. Not sure tho.

Hello,

It's still groaning, but after purposely listening for it, it seems it's worse when just started and all is still cold.

Does this sound about right.

After getting side tracked with panhard rods and girl-on-girl action, I thought I should actually get around to the real reason of the post.:D

My S2 V8 steering was groaning too while stationary and turning the wheels, like just before pulling away from the kerb. Definately the power steering. Told the mechanic when I took it in for the service and he said it was most probably dirty power steering fluid and it was time to change it. The bill he gave me had power steering fluid on it, and the noise was gone, so i imagine he changed it. Of course it might have been low as well and changing the fluid would have topped it up too no doubt.

Just my 2 bob's worth :D
