Hi All-
Wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction on this one- driving down the road today, and the brake pedal almost went to the floor all of the sudden. Then came back. Noticed a loud angry grinding noise from the front left. When I got it stopped, I got under it, and I can see where a part of the suspension is jammed into the inside of the wheel, and rubbing. (I can find it on the diagram, but I don't know what it's called!) All the searches related to grinding deal with brake pads or wheel bearings- can't find anything that looks like this. (In the pic, the silver part is where the part has rubbed the wheel) Anyone have any thoughts?
(I just spent a dozen hours doing the heater core! I hate to give up on my girl now! Cheers!)

Thanks- that helps me find the parts... any idea what condition would cause it to crash into the wheel (while it's still attached on both ends?
I think this is an unusual problem...

Thanks- Tie Rod end in the states I think? Anyway, any idea what condition would cause it to crash into the wheel (while it's still attached on both ends?

Its touching on both sides ffs I would jack the vehicle up & get a willing assistant to move the wheel from side to side
& look underneath to see what's going on you may have a steering rack problem ive never seen both rods hitting
at once o_O

I think it's just the drivers side (USA) that's rubbing- the other one shows no marks. I just jacked her up and tried to move the wheel side to side and top to bottom (traditional wheel bearing check I think?) No movement at all. Wheel spins freely. Thanks much for your comments.

Ah ok hopefully its just the worn ball joint on the tie rod & a cheap easy fix ;)

Cheers Kev

I would get the road wheel off and have a good look at the ball joint and the hub arm, it does look very close to the inside of that rim, be sure to check the swivel hub ball jints for play using a big pry bar too as one of those could have collapsed.

But the worn out gator says that needs sorted anyway.

id be looking at wheel bearing or swivel ball joints

I did think at first the wheel bearing but usually there is a rumble for 6 months before they collapse
& no mention of any previous symptoms, I seen the dust cover burst & went for the tie rod...although the swivel joints is a good possibility thinking about it ;)

Yep- I hadn't noted any noise from the wheels prior to this- I'm usually pretty in tune with car noises so I think I would have heard.. So, I think the bearings are fine. Cheers.

please come back to us and let us know how you get on, more pics are essential ;)

Update: I took the wheel off and started digging around.. Biggest thing that jumped out: The outside brake pad was gone- the caliper was dragging on the outside of the rotor.. (I thought I'd checked those a couple months ago but...) So, that was probably the big noisy part. However, a couple of strange things: The drag link had some marks around it from dragging inside the wheel, but i looks like most of the rubbing was the back of the caliper on the inside of the wheel. (See picture.) The caliper was completely pushed out- maybe that threw the geometry off? I'm off to replace the pads and rotors, but scratching my head at how the back of the caliper would ever touch the inside of the wheel.\(And yeah do I feel stupid for letting the pads go that low.) Also noticed that there is fluid seeping from the end of the axle across from the boot around the wheel hub -probably unrelated? (Second picture.)

Oh, and I ordered the new drag link as well.
Cheers. (And thanks again everybody- very grateful for the support.)

(Edit for clarity- brakes were quiet and functional till this afternoon- sudden failure was, I'm guessing due to the pad popping out...)

Oooeph!!! :eek::eek::eek:

They are a floating caliper and the housing has become fully extended on the sliders and combined with the excessively worn rotors will have seen it become loose on the pins, you should also get the calipers checked over and maybe get that one replaced if it has been bent out of shape as it will stick.

You're lucky that the pad hadn't worn right through the rotor and you could have lot the whole thing

And... We're back on the road. Long story short: one of the brake pads (or what was left of it) fell off the caliper and wedged between the wheel and the hub, accounting for the noise.... I lack a 12 point 20mm 1/2 inch drive socket to remove the caliper mounting and replace the rotors today, but the new pads on both sides got us going again.
Thanks everyone for the troubleshooting help...

I listened to a not-that-old Range Rover coming down the road today with no pads at all on the front nearside wheel ... flagged him down to tell him and got told to mind my own fecking business about other peoples cars ...

So, if you get rear ended, in SE Lunnen, by a white 2012 Rangie driven by a twunt, make sure you look at his brakes ...

Some people are idiots what a total plank

Sadly not an uncommon response these days, I stopped a VW Caddy van at the end of my road a few weeks ago as he had no brake lights at all, only to be met with insults and a threat of violence until I stood upright and asked him to get out so I could put some manners on him, twunt declined sadly, but at least he knows he has no brake lights.
