The Freelander has developed, quite suddenly, a strange noise.

Driving back from Leeds to home, about 17 miles, a I eased off the power it started to make a grinding noise. Foot back on the power and it stopped.
Managed to get it home and am awaiting a break in the weather to have a look.

It is definitely coming from drivers side front.

Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

Stone / debris in the disc shield?? Wheel bearing beginning to fail?

Front suspension mount bearing. Mines done it on and off for years. Can't be arsed to replace it.

It made this noise whilst sat on the drive in neutral, thats why Im thinking starter motor as opposed to any kind of running gear.

I think I would also be checking ancillary belts and pulleys, especially tensioners . I would also check crankshaft end float, but probably ott!

I would be checking all belts and everything driven by them, or near them where the belt could catch.
