Hi, I have a 2000 Defender 90 TD5 which has done about 77k. I have noticed that when I'm doing over 60mph I get a grinding noise when I either take my foot off the accelerator or put the power back on. It only does it at speed and is much more noticeable on the motorway when doing 70+.

I am hoping it is just a UJ but after reading a few posts on here it normally does it in all gears with UJs.

Has anyone else experienced this?

What sort of grinding noise is it?

Is it a whine-type or a growl?

Have you checked your gear, transfer box and diff oil levels?

had an almost identical experience and mine was the rear prop uj's

Mine is doing similar. But almost sounds little body rattle just as you lift off or just put the gas on.

Rear prop and uj's are new. Changing my drive shafts and flanges soon as they are really worn.

Will let you know if that does the trick.

Favourite is always the uj's though.

Thanks for your replies. It's a short vibrating-type noise, probably half a second, each time I accelerate or decelerate at speed. My radius arm bushes were quite worn and I had put it down to that but after replacing them the noise remains!!

I have had UJs go before and have found they tend to rattle all the time.

I went round to grease all the uj's yesterday but could not find a grease nipple on the propshaft itself. I am sure there used to be one on each uj and one on the prop? Rear prop is a wide angle one and front is double cordon so are these different to normal/"sealed for life" units? Or maybe I am just blind!

No all ujs will have a greasing point. You mite find the grease nipple has unscrewed and fallen out, wich case clean off the uj till you find a small hole(threaded) and screw in a replacement nipple.
Haha I said nipple!!
You mite also find that grinding noise is your transfer box.
;)

All of the UJ's had grease nipples - it is the main shaft itself (front and rear) that do not have grease nipples. Very strange.

could be diff pinion bearing noise ,props often have a replaceable grub screw instead of nipple needs removing to fit grease nipple, remove a prop and try it

thanks - it is in the normal place where the grease nipple would be? also how do they come out - allen key ?
