No, just while heavy braking or when I change down while revs are high but after I release the clutch.
another thing to try, hand brake hard on, 2nnd gear (presume it's a derv, for petrol try first) lift the clutch slowly, should stall just after it reaches bite point
if it does, try holding the clutch down for a while with the car in the same gear and the handbrake on... does the car rock back and forth...

Yes it does and no it doesn't.
Haven't checked the fluid in the gearbox yet, will check later. Has anyone got any other suggestions. Its not causing any problems with regular driving but I dread the next time some a$$hole decides to play chicken with me!
I think you can rule out the clutch.. if it was slipping it wouldn't stall until quite a way from bite point, if it was clutch cylinders you would find that holding the clutch pedal for a while would not hold the clutch open very well... unless perhaps a little grit contaminating the plates...
so gearbox itself.. what about synchro... does it slip into gear easily enough or is it tough / notchy to get into any gears?

I need to revive this thread as the problem just got a whole lot worse, like an idiot I ignored it but it just wouldn't go away!!!
Last night I accelerated hard away from a junction and something went with a bang followed by a loud rattling noise. The disco would still drive but everytime I press the clutch I am getting a grinding/rumbling noise and the pedal judders quite badly. I have also noticed I am losing pressure on the clutch pedal.
A local garage told me I will probably need a new clutch but as of now they still haven't phoned me with a price. I know the slave cylinder could cause the loss of pressure but I recently had this changed, (or could I have knackered the new one??).
The grinding noise when I stamp on the brakes has now gone though!!
Any thoughts, is the local garage correct and is this gonna cost me a fortune? I don't have the right facilities to be able to remove the gearbox myself as my house has no driveway so DIY would be difficult for me at the moment.

a decent indi garage should be able to change a disco clutch for around the £450 mark

I agree to an extent, I thought my days of messin with cars were long behind me but now I have to decide:
a. Couple of days scraping my knuckles, getting soaked, swearing at every stranger that goes by and tellin the kids to eff off when they askin me to drag my ass out from under a great lump of metal to buy em a fukin lollipop. or...

I'll have a look at that later, question though, how heavy is the gearbox? i.e. 1 man or 2 man job?
its a one grippa - or 3 normal guys.
it's a 1 man job if you use jacks/hoists/blocks to drop the GB etc - if yer smart there's no heavy man handling to do
if yer methodical and prepared it's very doable in a day

like Sean says it can be a DIY job, but I wouldnt recommend doing it on your own as you will need moral support, coffee, loads of jacks, blocks of wood, ciggies and a swear box...
