Hi All-

I just gotten a P38. I've had a D90 NAS for about 10 years, and I know I've really got the illness with a pair of LRs in the garage now. It was a Florida truck, so that means a bit of clear coat burn-through on the roof, but no evidence of salt damage! Up here in Vermont a salt-free car is a rare commodity.

It's been odd getting used to a car with so many bells and whistles; I'm working my way through the familiar mechanicals and it seems like the issues are mostly (so far) related to trashed ball joints. A previous owner seems to have had the mechanical aptitude of Mr. Ed, and I'm seeing a lot of deferred (ignored) maintenance. That said, I have a couple of issues so far that I haven't been able to diagnose in RAVE. I'll start with the primary one and deal with the fiddly luxury car gubbins later.

The big issue is with the automatic gearbox. Basically I can just barely select 3, but I can't get it down into 2 or 1. There was some initial slop that I sorted out by snugging the 13mm selector arm nut down and fiddling with the cable adjuster, and even though everything from D up is nice and crisp now, I still can't get it into those lower gears. I even tried disconnecting the selector cable and moving the arm manually - it's pretty hard work moving the lever, and once I get past D it'll go into 3 with some force, but it's almost like 1 and 2 don't exist, and I dare not force it too hard. I've checked the transmission fluid level and everything looks good there. Any ideas on this one? I'm hoping it's not something internal related to the selector shaft.

Thanks!
