Hello!

First post as an introduction :)

This is my current LR, a 1968 long-wheel-base truck-cab. Not the nicest one in the world, but it does the job.

Essentially used (& abused) fetching and carrying and treated to a good mud bath on a sunday morning with some fairly sedate green-laning. :)

This is my old one, a '58 series 2 which I rescued from a garden & put back on the road.

I'd love something a bit more 'proper' in the long-term, you know the deal, coils & V8's etc, but time and cash stand in my way. Until then I dream ;)

Yes, the S2 was an ex-RAF vehicle, but that's all I know.

It had all the classic MoD clues, like the fuel filler under the drivers seat, plus the obvious double-bumpers and wing disc.

Unfortunately I had no history other than that, and the owners after it was de-mobbed had been far from 'loving' :D

I bought it for £120 and did the bare minimum to scrape an MoT pass, which I later realised wasn't such a great idea! I still think it was a bargain as despite sitting unused for several years everything still worked perfectly (under the layers of filth & lichen that is was covered in.

Had I kept it though, I'd have been forking out for a new bulkhead and floors by now as they were 'ropey' to say the least.

The Series IIA has also lead a colourful existence - it was exported when new to Australia and spent its first ten years there earning it's keep for a mining company.
For whatever reason, some-one saw fit to return it to the UK, and hence how it finished up on the inappropriate reg. number. I thought about re-registering it to get an 'F' suffix, but it seems a shame to rob it of an ID it's had for nearly 30 years. Does confuse the casual observer, who can oft be found telling me how not-tax-exempt my land rover is :D

It needs a new door pillar in the not-too-distant, but other than that is 100% grot free.
Oh and it was until recently painted shocking pink! Yuk!!
 
Well I suppose some-one just ticked the wrong box on the application form for the (pre-computerised) DVLA & it got registered as a 'new' vehicle, despite being 10 years old at the time.

I think back then it was quite common for this to happen.

It still can happen now - I recently saw a 1980's VW Van registered on a 'T'- prefix.
 
I'd say the one you have is about as 'proper' as it gets. Coils are a thing that only girls have a use for.
 
Just a quick bump to say hello again... realised I hadn't been on here in over six months. Oops!

Anyway, the S2A has departed the fold. Regret selling it really, but wasn't quite fitting with the needs!

But as you all know, once the bug has bitten you, that's it - infected for life. So I am now the 'proud' owner of this 1972 SWB S3 diseasel.

Another one aquired for peanuts.
Bought as I recently got a border collie pup, so wanted something to run him about in.

Tax exempt and dieselness keeps the missus happy too as it won't cost the earth tho run.

When I got it, it was a complete non-runner. An afternoon's fiddling soon saw the engine chugging nicely, and I was pleased to find that pretty much everything works as it should. OK, so it needs a general overhaul (mechanically) and it came with about a quarter ton of free mud, inside, outside, underneath everything was caked in several inches of the stuff!!!

The downside is that the chassis isn't in the best of health. So hopefully you'll get a follow up thread as I try to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. I'd love a galvanised chassis, but for now it will just get patched up.... watch this space!
 
LOL!

I have no idea! Some kind of home-brewed effort... it's very noisey at the least. Oh and obviously it has to be removed to access the engine (???!!!), so when I first got it running you could hear it from about a mile away!

I'd understand if it was paired with a snorkel inlet, but it's not!

Fear not, I'll lash up something a little more conventional soon ;D
