Hi all,

I've been wondering how many of you go laning with just one car and how many always go in convoy for safety reasons?

My 1st laning experience was in a hire disco 3 a year ago, after I'd researched a few easy routes (although still extremely enjoyable!). I guess looking back I'd have been buggered if I'd managed to get stuck and can only imagine the embarrassment if I'd had to call The AA or something to help! lol!

Do you guys just go in convoy on the more serious routes like Strata Florida?

Hmmmmmm

:)

I go laning solo and in groups.

Anywhere that's technical or challenging I generally try to go in a group, local stuff and lanes I know to be good I go alone .. I sometimes stray down dodgy or technically difficult lanes and have been known to get myself stuck .. but I have good recovery gear and can always get myself out (famous last words!!) I'm also pretty experienced and can read maps properly, I can mostly read the lanes pretty well too. I'm also not afraid to get out, walk the route first and decide if it looks too bad to reverse out! Plus I work odd hours, I have five hours from 9.30am to 2.30pm when most people are at work and when I can go .. most people can't go during the week when I do most of my laning, though I also go at weekends too ... ;)

If you don't have some kind of winch, strops, ropes, shackles, spade, ground anchor etc etc and don't the knowledge to use them, or have a lot of experience then I'd say don't even think about going it alone.

I'm 50 now and have been off-roading all my life, well, since I was 11 .. (motorbikes when I was young, Landrovers at 30 ish when my knees couldn't take it anymore)

Also if you are going on your own make sure you have some numbers of people that will be willing to come and help if things go wrong. If I can't make it for a days laning people still have my number if they need help, as I do should I have problems.

Seconded

with my mates and i we do laning in groups and alone it seems to me if you own a landy you will sometimes gate a late night fone call from a mate i trouble to go pull them out seems to be an unritten rule of landy ownership

When I first met Robin T he suggested that I do the Ridgeway solo. Very nearly got stuck but made it out okay.

And weren't you out soloing when I met you the other evening for some night white-laning? :D

lone trips is fer numptys we try to go in groups

Says it all really! ;)

I regularly drive lanes solo. we drove to/around Morocco solo. Also the Alps.

Nothing wrong with going on your own as long as your disaplined. Some of us dont actually like YOUR company :D

know your:

driving limits
vehicle limits
recovery gear
recovery techniques

know when to stop, turn around or get out, walk the terrain/check water depth.

carry a tent/sleeping bag

carry spares/know how to fix your vehicle.

If you cannot do any of the above, dont bother leaving your house.

Laning alone can prove a little...challenging!

And waiting in a stuck motor for umpteen hours can lose it's novelty mighty quick!

AA Won't help unless your on a tarmac public highway!

AA Won't help unless your on a tarmac public highway!

that all depends on wether it's the AA themselves or a contractor that comes out.

You are liable for 'specialist' charges to get you out the lane and on to the tarmac public highway.

Hi Ratty, where have you been not seen you post anything for a while.

Hiya Kris. It's been absolutely manic at work since about 3 weeks before xmas. It' just started to quieten down about a week ago. I've been doing between double and quadruple the amount of work I'd usually have to do.

I've still been popping in every now and then but haven't had a chance to login while at work like I would usually do.

Hows tricks with you?:)
