A short one to anyone new and old, who might be thinking that Green Laning is also 'off-roading'.

It isn't.

Simply put Green laning is done on proper roads that are in disrepair or ancient lanes, Byways, Un-classified roads etc, and needs a licensed driver, and fully road-legal vehicle with MOT, Insurance and V5.

Off-roading is driving off a road, obviously, but is usually done on private land with the landowners permission. The easiest way to go off-roading is often at a Pay 'n Play site where any vehicle, licensed and road legal or not may be allowed to drive round!

Be aware that all the Green Laning associations out there do not condone illegal off-roading, driving a vehicle where you're not entitled to, and will help the authorities find people responsible for the bad press we 4x4 drivers often get.

An example of which is West Yorkshire rep Alex Davidson who has the local paper using the correct terminology .. ;)

by roads in disrepair you mean the ones owned by highways England ?

so, once my range rover is on the road by next week, my friend insist going with his disco somewhere off road. lol.
he bought his Disco 2 hours after i bought my range rover. lol

are there any easy green lanes around the peak which are not off road tracks and easy to go through without damaging the vehicle? i dont really intent having it dented and scratched to hell. lol

i know he dosnt care but i do. i already told him we can go to some off road events but mine stays in the carpark. ha ha - he just want to see how his disco is off the road.

( and yes i been off the road with a Pajero. Trooper and Patrol but this is ages ago. )

Join GLASS and have a look at TW2, or join a local GL group. Be careful some lanes are closed due to Councils wanting to keep people away because of CV19.

Cheers

With some green lanes being less travelled than others, what am I allowed to do in terms of trimming branches so I don't scratch the car? Don't want to do something I'm not allowed too :D
Thanks!

One end of the road I live on is classified as a green lane, that's easy enough to drive on.. I do it in the car... It's tarmacked,!!

Prune them back if you want. But if it’s new growth it won’t damage your motor.
You will be pruning a lot if you want a no scratch adventure round some lanes

Honestly, walk it before hand. If you are not happy to drive it without risking "scratches", then do not drive it.

Most people happy to drive greenlanes understand they will risk getting scratches, and do not worry about it.

Clearing a blockage, tree down across a lane, branch stopping travel etc, is where we would stop and get the saw , chainsaw out and clear the route or if a very large blockage , reverse out of it.

Coming across someone trimming the hedges on the route to avoid any scratches whatsover could cause traffic jams on some of the lanes in rural Wiltshire.

Cheers
