The fun controler and I went out in the Defender checking out some of the lanes local to us and had a good couple of hours. Some of them a little bit sratchy but I guess it's all part and parcel of it.

Came across a nice one sign posted through a farmers field running up a bit of a valley (pic below)

Why dont you guys organise a day out over there if there are that many lanes, sounds like good fun and im sure there are a few of us from surrey way that would love to do them ?

I might think about it...
altough people would have to agree that I wont be doing the same as the salisbury trip and go check the lanes first.

everyone comes at their own risk, if we end up down a dead end and having to reverse for a mile and dont want people going stroppy about it

Hi JP, I'd be up for this sometime. I did a few of these lanes with TV4x4 a couple months back and it is indeed a complex web of byways, restricted byways, footpaths and bridleways. Good fun. I never knew where I was from start to finish though. Getting lost is almost guarranteed.:D

Thats cool with me, all part of the fun testing your reversing skills aswell as forward lol, and if there are a few of you that know the area just do the lanes you know are ok

JP,

Yeah Lambourne near Newbury just North of the M4! Some decent lanes round that way, some a little scratchy but nothing to horrific.

I'd be up for doing more and getting involved. I can read a map quite well and mark all the lanes that I do now so I can keep my own record of which ones are doable, fun and what is the best direction to do it. All my own ameture opinion obviously!

Sounds good thor if the others know a few too would be a good day out so get organizing lol

I know where the byways are by looking at the map but never driven it, so i dont know if they are scratchy or not..

when i go out i just go exploring, so I might think of organizing something, but dont want people moaning about the condition of the byway, etc..

haha, I have only done the one afternoon down that way so not in a position to organise a day out.

JP....If we do make this happen than where ever the meet point is we get together over a brew and point out any lanes that folk have local knowledge of, and then emphasize the fact that the ones we have no knowledge of could be scratchy/closed at one end/impassable or all the fore mentioned! We all either get a sense of adventure or we'll meet you the other end of the BYWAY. No great shakes really.

I'm going to get the adjoining maps to the ones I already have and see what other lanes are about!

well, i've just been marking some up, and then got bored.. but you get the idea of how many lanes are around here...

the ones over Thatcham, to the right of Newbury, only managed to mark a few, but there's at least 10 of them just in that little space there...

oh... i forgot to mark the Ridgeway, that runs along the M4, but I think its restricted during the winter... or summer... dont know, but with so much choice of other byways we really wouldnt need to venture there

The ones you've marked are quite a few of the ones I've done.

The Ridgeway (starting at grid 500 812) has a sign saying closed from Oct 1st till April 1st I think it was. Deffo closed now though. Besides that ones is very scratchy later on...I have a video with lots of scratchy screeching noises!!!

The pic I started this thread with is the lane from Baydon hole. Best to start at Grid 293 786 and travel east bound. I went west bound and turned around near the Baydon hole end as it was up hill, proper muddy and was on my own so used a bit of sense and caution.

Be warned, the outing I went on proved to be VERY scratchy. Not a good venue for any shineys:)

not a prob... this was 2 years ago on my old disco, went from a full width lane to barely wide enough to walk through, on this pic its me walking back up the lane trying to find the top of my snorkel... lol
