I also carry a few pieces of plywood, to use as a board to put the jack on if needed to increase the footprint.

The last time I took the high lift jack was on a trip across Morocco three years ago. The only time I used the thing was on the motorway in Morocco on our way back when I had a blow out. And the Defender fell off the jack again. I have never had a situation where a shovel and a bottle jack couldn't get me out of trouble. If a high lift jack works for you then good luck. They do look butch mounted on the back of a Defender.
