Hi all, First please forgive my ignornace...

I've just purchased my first Defender 90 td5 2000 model its standard apart from some shinny disco wheels and mud terrain tyres took 37 years but i got there..
i would like to take it green laning, nothing to heavey as its far to shinney for any of the rough stuff plus being a complete novice dony really want to get stuck...

You might laugh at this bit:) i live just outside wirksworth nr malock in the derbyshire dales, Peak District... i know.... i know... there is about a million trails and lanes..... But were do i start like i say im a complete novice and would'nt want to start by driving straight up someones drive.... ;)

All your help and mainly your ADVICE on were to start would be greatly received....

Best advice?
Join BADLRC - Buxton & District Land Rover Club.
All the latest info from their RoW guy means you won't fall foul of the law.

Joining a club is a good idea but if you want to do it without a club then do this.
Get an OS map of the area - 1:25000 or 1:50000. Look for Byways open to all trafic (BOAT's) these are red or green cross lines (+ + + + + )depending on which scale map.
Also look for 'Other Routes with Public Access' (ORPA's) these are red or green dotted lines depending on which scale map. These are the two types of track that can be driven but to be sure you need to check the councils definitive map or contact the rights of way officer with the start and finish grid references.

I think you'll find it more to do with the fact that they don't know who they are talking to, how you drive or if you have an ulterior motive. The last thing anyone wants is to unwittingly give a whole load of routes to someone who takes 10 motors out for a mudplugging sesh' on the upward approach to Stanage for example. Both ends of the Stanage Edge route are very fragile and have been abused the hell out of, over the last few years. There are proposals to shut several lanes that are alledgedly 'under threat' from these vandals and it nearly all stems from numpties who don't know or don't care about the difference between Greenlaning (the driving of unsurfaced rights of way) and Offroading (the driving of vehicles at a specific Pay & Play or Club site).
As I have stated before, I would have no qualms about reporting illegal activity on laning trips, why should I have my hobby ruined because of a bunch of muppets who think it's cool to get mud on the roof of their vehicle!

very y true.Stanage is a hard lane to drive very testing. However i was surpised to see people had ragged the approach. The lane its self is stone so hard wearing.

Fair point... am new to all this and i can assure you my landy is far precious to go throwing it around any fields causing mahem .. Its took me 37 years to get hold of one!:eek:

Absolutely, however you can see how it looks to those who want to keep the lanes open for everyone's enjoyment.
Houndskirk Moor is another route suffering badly from Muppet Syndrome. Thankfully Operation Blackbrook seems to be having an effect in the area (google for more info).

haha thats called the public, we pay road tax to have roads well maintained, sort of like a club membership i suppose ;-)

if people paid club membership to drive the lanes, maybe the money could be used to maintain them as well?

Exactly! Just a shame the pricks who's pocket it goes into, won't spend any of it on the green lanes that are in need of abit of tlc!

If you're wanting a trip out, I'm sure we can sort something. I have a full route on a map that I've never managed to complete in the peak district. I can give you the route or if anyone else wants to join in we might be able to sort a run out.

put me down for a portion of that got a classic rangie tdi pretty standard not bothered about odd dent or scratch let me know where and when cheers mark

Well if someone from around chesterfield who has done lanes around here wants to volunteer to lead, I'll go at the back. I have tonnes of off road experience but being only 17 I've only done laning once driving. Been a few times as a passenger. Mine isn't ready to do anything at the moment because I've developed a strange clutch problem. I'm hoping it's not on its way out. It should be ok in a few weeks after I've sorted it. So if someone from round here gives me a shout about being a guide, we'll see what we can do.

il come, need to sort my clutch first tho. i dont fancy getting stuck down some lane somewhere!

Count me in as well (assuming I'm not working). I've not done any lanes yet but can't wait to get started.
Hi Karl thanks for the bracket.
