HI everyone,
Have any of you got experience of navigating using a GPS unit linked to Google Earth on a lap top?
I am heading down through Africa soon and can see the merits of having your position plotted on to a Google Earth picture of the area (especially where the maps are poor or non existent) but I dont know how to do it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm assuming that yu'd need a laptop with a gps dongle & Google earth installed have yu tried the FAQ section on the google earth website?
 
just had a look on Google earth & there doesn't seem to be a problem doing this, as said just needs a PC & a GPS unit or dongle plugged in.
 
Seems like a good idea. I wouldn't use your phone as a GPS through Africa though. Gt something more robust. IF you have bluetooth, the Garmin GPS 10 unit should solve your issues.

I've tried it in UK and it works fine .. I use a Tom Tom GPS receiver, normally connected to either Tom Tom or Memory Map on my PDA .. but I also tried it with a Bluetooth dongle on the laptop .. All works well, TT, MM, and Google Earth worked well. In fact, if what you want to use it with works on the laptop anyway, it should also work with a GPS/Bluetooth dongle.
 
Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you need an internet connection to use Google earth? I am pretty sure that the data is streamed to your computer, not stored locally. Just thought it is worth checking before you need to use it in the M.O.N
 
Why not just use a phone that supports Google latitude? (Such as an Iphone)

Be advised that this can be expensive depending on your data tariff.

Ideally, yes. It uses the TCP/IP protocol. However, caching is a workaround as already suggested, though, it's not always ideal.
