Fair enough but now through a friend I've been offered an 03 X5 3.0d auto, again seemingly needs nothing the family are just upgrading to a newer one.
Still money pits though, having said that that's what the guy selling the l322 went back to, not sure what year yet though.
I think you'll get the same answer from all, keep your P38 and give her some love.
Changing an old vehicle, that is relatively cheap and easy to maintain, whose history you know, for another old vehicle, that you have no true idea of history, and is full of manufacturer installed glitches , doesn't seem the wisest move.
Also, whatever they say the reason is for moving it on, ignore. Check it out yourself, with a fine toothcomb.

While yes you could be right but what I found out is that mine was written off 11 years ago, not bad enough to show on the log book but it's on the mot history for tailgate, back pass door and front pass pillar damage as dangerous.
It obviously got fixed as the owners since didn't bother or know.

As for the the L322, it's the mechanic use that's selling I've used him for about 7 or 8 years he's got another X5, only because out was cheap but then it's no problem for him being in the trade ect. He said I will probably get another RR but newer and not right now.
So most of you say keep what I've got and fix up. It's not that I wouldn't know the history of his, it's full and he knows it so I wouldn't be buying blind but still know what you're saying.

Having said that now I know mine was technically written off makes me wonder but I wonder how many others I've had through the years that also had a shady past and didn't know.

Two things from this. The first is write off means nothing. I 'wrote off' the same car twice. It happens quite frequently with high marque vehicles. First time my Volvo was written off, the damage was a roof lining, a head light and a bumper. Vehicle was 5yrs old and parts expensive. Second time was a door, and two side panels. Both times, once repairs were done, itbwas a straight little car, just not viable for the insurance company to repair. Hence written off.
Second thing picked up is, no matter the advice, or opinions, given here, you seem to have already decided, the P38 is going. Otherwise you wouldn't have gone straight from L322 , to X5, without a breath. Just my opinion , but it's how it reads.
Good luck whatever you decide.

No I haven't decided the P38 is going yes you did read wrong, I'm simply having my options open that's all. The only and main reason I'm thinking about it as I said is because it's the guy I've used for a few years and he knew the owner. He got it cheaper than normal because it needed wear and tear stuff done, he's did it but now back to an X5.

Fair enough. I know which I would do, having spent 11yrs with my L322 and 10yrs sucking up as much knowledge as possible from these pages, and friendly mechanics. If I was coming into it now, with your choices, and didn't mind if I had P38 or L322,with all that experience and information, my choice would P38, then L322. BMW , personally, I wouldn't touch, but that's just because I don't like them, especially the X series. :)
Good luck, whichever you choose, and happy motoring :)

Although the X5 and L322 share a gearbox and engine, in the X5 the gearbox was less prone to **** the bed as the L322 was too heavy for the GM box. It was a bit of "that'll do" job, and why the TD6 L322s so commonly come up cheap as chips. The GM boxes failed in as little as 60k miles. The X5 ends up being a safer bet of the two just because it went on slimfast.
They are all reaching that point in life where they've fallen out of the bottom of the market and they're being picked up for people who want the name without the price tag, then start to skip services or ignore faults because the repair is more than the car. Looking at around 4-5k these days for a new box replacement. But you could get 2 or 3 early L322s for that sort of money now.
My old mechanic used to say when you're buying second hand, you're buying someone else's problems. Doubly so for vehicles at the bottom of their market. Ultimately no one can tell you what to do with your money.

I dont normally get involved in which is best threads as its all about "one mans meat and another mans poison" kinda thing .But my 2ps worth is.....yes the L322 can be more expensive to maintain but it has better on road manners than a P38 , and again my opinion, a more luxerious interior , just a far nicer thing ( in my opinion), just buy what you're comfortable with would be my advice :)

Seems like you do know the history of the L322 so you know what it has had done etc

My cousin had an X5 ... Briefly before the repair bills got too much. Think the gearbox went, now I think about it. Mind you, he does 60k miles a year. He's had Discos ever since.

I only know that when he got it he fixed and replaced quite a few things, and he knows or knew who he got it from. I'm not saying he knows it from new but probably not far from it.

He did say though he was fed up fixing this and that, yes it's lovely to drive but he he's "had it" and went back to an X5. Same engine and box as we know.

L322 is a lovely car but I suspect the P38 will outlive it. I also suspect it will go wrong more and cost more to fix. If you have the time and money or don't hang onto cars long then probably not an issue. Personally I use cars until I can no longer fix them.

I guess you're right as I say though, nothing definate yet.

Ok trying to help here.

As owners of both.
I can say that the P38 is a really nice motor and if you have owned for a while and kept it sorted it will last. Its a great comfy car.
The 322 you are looking at sounds as if its on the beginnings of being sorted (your mate said hes fed up with it;)). So its gonna need more:eek:
If you want a 322 then wait and save a bit more to get out of the cheesey gearbox/engine range, Keep the P38 a little longer as is sounds like its doing you well.

J

I've had it since Feb but only used it for that month till the mot ran out but was on the bump stops mainly and wasn't nice.
It needs an exhaust well the flexi, an abs module, maybe sensors to get the brakes and tc lights off and working right. Also the srs light off but apart from that nothing serious, so if I could just get that done and use it and take it from there.

He's selling because as said went back to an X5 but won't sell the 322 till it's running right ie lp pump he's waiting for.
