It's an 02 mine's an 01 P38, mine needs the exhaust flexi but a bugger to fit, needs the ecu for the abs and maybe for the srs, now.

The mech I use has an 02 3.0 tdi auto he's selling he's did a lot of ie brakes, tyres among other stuff but said it's not running right but one he gets it right it's for sale. He want 2000 and I'm seriously thinking about it and selling mine.

Thing is, is the L322 a lot better than the P38 or not much. Still has air suspension but a but more modern looking albeit still nearly 20 years old.

Or should I keep mine and fix.

Dare I ask how's the gearbox?

"is the L322 a lot better than the P38 or not".
Comparing apples and oranges. Although P38 comes across as easier , and cheaper, a LOT cheaper, to maintain.
An unknown L322 is a big thing to take on. Even if your chum has done some bits to it, your £2k purchase , needs another £1-2k available for justins.
As an L322 owner, and I love her, I say keep your P38 and get the bits done. :)

So his despite him doing a stack of work on it is worse ie more electronic wizardry to go wrong.
Yes. Don't forget tin worm, gearbox, and higher parts prices.
Mine is a 2002, she has already had two rub back and paint of the arches since I got her, but I'm on that sort of thing quick as a rat up a drain pipe. Some people leave them to get a lot worse. She is showing signs of bubbling again, so end of the month she's off to the doctor to get arches cut out , and the new ones, (from the lovely Stuart at FamousFour) put in. She's also getting a paint job on all the little, niggly, bits.
Gearbox cost about £2k, a few years ago.
Idea of parts prices: Wing mirror* which by now yours will be ready to go if not already , costs around £90+
Second hand rear latch £40+ , if you can get one. New £120+ vat
I'm sure you already know that P38 prices are nowhere near that.
Unless your pal's L322 has been loved, it will be at the point where most things are failing, for the second time ;)
*Forgot to,add, that's just the glass . Not the whole thing.

So in other words, more modern looking despite only 2 years, more luxurious, parts higher, auto box not as hardy/ durable, dodgy electrics even worse than a P38

Well, there's a few on the road where I am but no P38's

That's about it, in a nutshell. She's a beautiful lady, and most beautiful ladies require beautiful lady gifts ;)
Don't get me wrong, you may get a year or two of joy, because your chum has spent money recently. Then again, she may demand more attention the day you buy her. If you do buy her, you will fall in love, more than you ever did with your trusty P38. The L322 seems to captivate those of us who own them. Even the gruff, rufty, tufty, types seem to struggle to part with one, but at some point she will become best friends with your bank manager.
Just for the heck of it, don't suppose you fancy sharing more details on her,eg what mileage, what work your friend has done, what work has been done over the years, what the tinworm is like, what works on the gadgets side, etc.
If you want to be brave and share reg we can see if she has been loved, or left to rot between MoTs, which will give an even better idea as to have they done the big jobs.
If any vehicle deserves Caveat Emptor on it's V5 , it is the now almost 20yr old L322 ;)

More rot, more expensive parts, more diagnostics required, more procedures to bare in mind and more beautiful interior.
I have been looking at one same colour blue as my p38 near by. £2995 3.0TDi, ‘everything’ done.....still big risk I’d need £5K to be safe and demand he gives me some sort of warranty in writing

Just a small thing but if seller is calling it a Tdi , then be very wary. It's a Td6

or buy a cheap dog and spend the money doing all the jobs you might of had to do anyway, just remember either way cheap motoring there not

Keep yours and fix. It'll last longer. The L322 is a lovely motor but an utter barsteward at that age.

Fair enough but now through a friend I've been offered an 03 X5 3.0d auto, again seemingly needs nothing the family are just upgrading to a newer one.
Still money pits though, having said that that's what the guy selling the l322 went back to, not sure what year yet though.
