I think we were going to meet in Gaydon but I'm happy with Wiltshire if there's a tricky field to conquer! Stonehenge nearby and Avebury. Bound to be some nice pubs around.

Just kidding about a group meeting, not sure Ian's bees would like a load of RR buzzing around their field, let alone the land owner.

Maybe he owns the field?

Don't think the bees mind as long as we stay away from their heather. Do they get heather in Wiltshire? Probably clover flowers on reflection.

Thank you for the info guys. I would love to meet up. The field is a private field as owned my a farmer and don't want to upset him. So only could take one car. But would love to meet up. Even for you guys to pick any faults my car has?

Hi guys me again
I've just got my car back on the road after I have changed the heater matrix o rings and blend motors

I went to see my bees and I got bloody stuck again.
The ground was level but it was a grass field and a little bogie but not much

I got half way through the gate and the front wheels got stuck in and keeped spinning. The clicking noise was there but I didn't notice the TC light going on and off. I reversed out the field very pist off.

Is there anything wrong with the 4 wheel drive does anyone think?

I have seen this happen a lot with the RR (p38) I have a DSE with no TC and whilst it will do all sort off road with no problems I had to pull it out of a slightly slippy wet field with my freelander on the last trip. It's just that they are heavy and early loose traction to spin the wheels. I bet that it happens not at all or a lot less with 4 wheel TC

I've got the rear wheel TC in mine. Not a lot of difference although seems to help on snow. Would love to have a go with 4W TC and compare!

I had 4 wheel traction control on my 05 defender, the problem I always found was that in order to get it operating you needed the wheels to spin, which on really wet mud was easy, but because it was so easy if the wheels spun too much the TC would overheat and turn itself off without the driver knowing. My mates Disco 3 was completely different, very capable even on road tyres on the same terrain, you could see the wheels spin then stop, it almost looked like it was clawing itself out of the mud, shame everything else on it was so unreliable.

I prefer good old fashioned driver ability (or lack of it when I get stuck).

Traction control on a Defender?! Sacrilege. Tell me it still had diff-locks?

Guess that it depends on the TC system, but without lockable diffs i honestly don't think you can sniff at TC.

I'm sure I read something that you can upgrade to 4 wheel TC if you have rear wheel? Well maybe or maybe not.

Or get a freelander as a recovery vehicle ;)

If you have no TC then you can upgrade the brake modulator and the ABS computer and get rear TC.

The modulator and the ABS computer pins are different for the 4W TC. I saw a thread on another site saying the guy had worked it out (he thought) but his car was wrecked shortly afterwards and you've got to wonder if he got it right!

:eek::eek:

RE the posts about the VCU - IMHO a seized VCU will give you more traction on very slippy surfaces in a straight line - so even if it is seized - it's not the cause of your problem.

Mine has 4 wheel TC, it really struggles on a wet grassy slope that my Pajero with a centre diff lock and rear LSD went up with no problem.

That doesn't surprise me. My old H plate Defender went through just about anything with diff lock on. LSD would help too.

No doubt that wet, muddy fields are worse than snow!

Doesn't help Ian, mind. Well, it does, Kamlockers next! Pity about locking that VCU.

Ok guys firstly on the low range what gear should I have used?
There is a picture of a truck going up and down.

Also how do I know if my truck has front or read TC

I really don't know anything about driving off road on this thing
So any advice is very much appreciated

On my trooper it was manual and I only used hi range and I could drive it anywhere never got stuck

I don't want to start upgrading things on this truck. Costing me a fortune as it is

I'd use low 3 but not with the manual button pressed.

4W TC control came as standard in about 1999, I think. Before that was rear or none.

Morning guys
I've jacked up my car today to test the wheel thing
Do I need a big bar thing to turn the wheel
I've tried to turn the wheel by hand and it's not turning

But regarding the other comment about going round corners and feeling it bind or something I've been round many tight corners and it feels very smooth

You should be able to turn the wheel by hand. It should move slowly with steady pressure applied, will be difficult to move but never the less should move.

You need the gear lever in neutral. Needs a lot of effort.
