I posted back in June that I was back in the fold and looking for a good D2 but having difficulty with the price / condition equation. I received some good advice from a few of you (which hopefully I've followed) and have just picked up an extremely tidy example within my budget.

It's a 2000 TD5 S, totally original and unmodified right down to the factory radio cassette. 2 owners (same family) from new, a good service history, only 88,500 miles on the clock and a near new set of Goodyear Wranglers. Starts on the button, pulls well and has a good, precise (for a Discovery) gear change. Chassis is rock solid having been rust treated from new and the body has only a very few blemishes. The interior shows very little wear other than thinning on the drivers' seat bolster and the roof lining is intact having been refixed. All in all I'm well pleased with my new, 18 year old Disco.

Going forwards I will be looking for tips on preserving the early version TD5 engine and any other preventative maintenance deemed appropriate, all advice welcome.

Well done - some pics would be good
look after it and it should see you good for a number of years

Sounds like a dream, how much did u have to part with? Any pics ?
A lot would probably say far too much at £3k but I've looked at a dozens over the last 6 months from high mileage spares or repair basket cases at £1500 to late (04) low mileage ES Premiums at £9k+. I was advised to buy on condition and evidenced maintenance not age and/or mileage and I think I've done that. Bought locally from an established specialist who sorted anything that needed attention before a full service, so everything works not that on an S spec there is as much to go wrong.

Pictures to follow . . . . .

The Td5 is a pretty good engine if it's looked after. Regular servicing, oil change, all filters every 6000 miles or every year at least. I change mine at MoT time, air, fuel, oil and rotary oil filters.
The aux drive belt might need changing by now, if you do that, then consider changing to tensioner at the same time.
One thing which I believe does need looking at on the earlier engines is the security of the oil pump bolt. It does mean dropping the sump unfortunately. The bolt can become loose and the upgraded bolt has more, better locking compound on it.
No doubt others will be along with more ideas for you.

Thanks Brian. You were kind enough to respond back in June when I was despairing at ever finding a good one. I have already had the oil pump bolt checked by the independent specialist I purchased from along with a service but I shall certainly follow the remainder of our advice.

3k seems very good going on your description! I got £4100 for mine, a pursuit with 97k and little history. I think you've done well :)

I forgot to mention, largely because you asked about the lump. Apart from the engine servicing, I also have the other oils changed, gearbox, T-box and both axles changed every two years. Mine is a manual gearbox. I have the garage grease up the prop shafts while they have the Disco up on the lift too, including the slider joints.
Two years ago I had my garage replace the brake discs all round, there was an appreciable lip developing at the edges of the old ones.
If the rear suspension is on air then expect to have to replace the air bags at some time, I do mine as soon as they show signs of misbehaving, before the problems start to get too big. The bags should last at least five years but after that the rubber might start hardening and cracking which could lead to leaks. When the bags are being replaced check the integrity of the chassis behind them, it's not possible to see any rust there while they are in place.
In the engine, keep an eye on the red plug in the engine ECU, it's notorious for becoming contaminated with oil. If that happens then it's a case of replacing the injector harness.
On the electrics front, one symptom which might show its ugly face is the dreaded "3 Amigos". There's plenty about that here on the forum as well. Provided that the electrics are kept dry then they should work, but wires breaking due to use, such as in the grommets between the doors and the body can happen, as can wires chafing and causing short circuit problems. But as they say, "To err is human, a complete cock-up takes electronics!"

That's a good price. I paid £6500 for my 02 Td5 GS 3 yrs ago. 82k on clock, one owner from new and full supplying dealer service history. Mint inside and out. It was a proper Chelsea tractor, kept finding golf tees in it for months after buying it, lol.
Now sporting de cat, no centre box, re map, and winch bumper.
MAKE SURE AS PREVIOUSLY STATED. CHANGE OIL AND FILTERS REGULARLY AND TREAT CHASSIS REGULARLY...i use tectyl (marine anti corrosion coating), if its good enough to be used for boats at sea then it's good enough for land use.
And buy a nanocom, lol.
