so true, had a 5.7 v8 gas guzzler converted to lpg c18 years ago, cost £2k. on the miles I was doing to work I got payback in less than 12 months

Still likely you will spend more on the resto, tax, parts, tyres etc than fuel.
I agree with John, old landrovers arent well suited to that kind of use. Might be better to restore the landy slowly for local use, and keep an economical little car for long distances.
Thats what I do, I have a little diesel Clio. Cruise at 80, 60mpg, road tax is £20, a tyre is £35.
If I drove up to Lancs in the 90, I would be too stiff and tired in the morning to go out on the boat.

that is nice and easy on the wallet
I used to drive to Manchester and back in my 110, whilst I miss the 110 itself I don't miss sitting in it for long journeys

When I was 23, I used to drive up to Scotland in my series,to do tree work.
30 years on, I take the car when I can!
I keep dreaming of going on a road trip from Scotland to Pembrokeshire using the B road byways'. Probably take me about four days in my s3 petrol chugger. I think doing any serious mileage in a series on a regular basis is going to become very tiresome very quickly. I use mine for local driving only and never on a motorway leaving me keen enough to take it on the odd long spin now and then.
Unless you gear it up somehow doing 40 on a motorway aint going to make you many friends in the trucking world.
Furthest I have gone was Conniston, about 100 miles. I enjoyed it along the A and B roads but it took for piggin ever.

Sounds like you should move on to the next possibilities.
When I bought my S3 I had to cross the Forth Road Bridge and foolishly took it north on the M90. Big mistake. I could nearly get above 45mph and had all the hgv's bearing down behind me. It was very stressful. It's converted to petrol now and a wee bit faster but I'll never go on the motorway again.
