Ok just taken some nanocom readings..
Engine started after a few turns this time (surprising) and the readings were:
Engine speed - 764 average
Coolant temp - rose steadily to 46.7 before engine stopped
Fuel temp - rose steadily to 39 before engine stopped.
The engine ran for about 5 mins before started running rough and stopped.. Wouldn't start after several attempts.
Engine speed whilst turning it over 247-249 average

That crank speed reading is too low IMO... any fault code logged? ... though it seems that your problem is not connected to the topic's title which is only about a starting issue

Nope, no fault codes. Crank speed may be getting low cos I've given the battery grief today trying to start it so many times.
I agree wrong thread/topic, but I guess it does seem to be a starting problem now

You'll always have a starting problem with low crank speed signal or if the battery voltage drops below 10V while cranking, the temp sensor readings are Ok as long as in the morning both temps(fuel and coolant) are similar and close(maybe just a bit higher) to the ambient temp where the car stood over night if you see what i mean so check in the morning too before starting the engine only with ignition on(compare to the temp shown by the aircon unit)...and give a good charge to the battery and see the crank speed and voltage while cranking

That valve is a sound investment, mine had all the classic symptoms hard to start after standing for a while, tank pump squeeling when I put the ignition on, press the throttle and it fired up with a puff of smoke. I did the injector seals, and the diesel filter bleed valve, both made things a bit better, but the real turn round came when I re sealed the diesel pressure regulator, I think the two fuel lines were allowing air to seep into the system when it was standing, o rings on the end of the pipes were ragged. Fires up with a turn of the key now.

Okay I'll have a look. Again pardon my ignorance however where is the bleed valve and pressure regulator located?

Tomorrow morning I will record her starting and post up the link. Local garage is running some diagnostics on her also to see what codes crop up to hopefully point me in the right direction.

Mine was exactly the same when the starter motor was on its last legs. I proved it by parking at the top of a big hill and walking home. The next day it started great bump starting it. The starter spikes and stops the crank sensor working correctly.
Mine was worse when it was hot as if something was breaking down. It was intermittent but towing it or a hill as mentioned used to get it going
