hi tguys
my 2.5d when i start from cold the tick over is a bit lumpy till it worms up them it is ok
just been out to move it from cold again and it was hard to start but i notice that the glow plug light did not light up. could that meen the glow plugs need changing because i have not renewed tham for about a year now. any help would be apresheated

Usually I've found that the light will STAY illuminated if the plugs are faulty. If the light doesn't come in to start with, it's an electrical problem, I would check fuses and relays as the lads above suggest. If the plugs were iffy, the light would be on constantly.
Hope it helps.

hi came to the car this morning turned key and got the glow light car started ok. been using car to day and the glow light dose not come on every time when for fuel got glow light then went to car shop got new glow plugs came back out no glow light got back home. left car about 10 min no glow light.

Look for any signs of heating in the plastic round the relay and socket, it could just be a bad connection where it plugs in. I have known the connectors to push out of the plastic when a relay is plugged in if the plastic has deformed with heat. (not yet seen on a P38 as I'm new to the P38)

hi

this sounds very like you need a HOT START FIX look on e-bay

there is nothing wrong with your car thats how BMW set up the ecu from new, the glow plug only come on when you start from cold once the engine has been run the ecu will not turn on the glow plugs also cut fuel to the engine thus difficult to start, i had exactly the same problem just get a hot start fix, then the glow plugs will work every time you go to start the engine

Strange that, the glow plug light always comes on on mine, only the length of time varies with engine temp. If the engine is hot, the glowplug light appears for less than 1 second, when cold can be 30 seconds

hi guys been doing some more digging around to day tride both relays again no look.
got the meter out.
i have got the power to relay from bat that is ok.
there is power from the ecu to the relay when u turn key on.
cheaked the earth that is ok there is two uther wires that go from the relay to ecu put the meter to both ends thay are ok so no brake in them wires.
it is looking very much like an ecu fault.

Or it could be a sensor fooling the ECU into thinking the engine is hot

hi guys realy sorry i ment to add it in my last post.
on the subject of hot start i have had the car about 14 months now and every time u turn the key on i got the glow plugs even when the engine was warm. if u stopped for fuel back to car turn key and had glow pluges very time so i dont know if it had already had the hot start fix.
i will have a dig around to see if there is anything there im i right it is some thing that goes in the ecu many thanks

is the GP relay in the RR temperature dependant as it is on a 200/300 ?

I would guess it has got to be an electrical fault with a dodgy connection somewhere, my bet would still be on the relay socket
