do the heater plugs on a diesel work all the time or only when you hold the key in the heater position on a cold day

Theey are only on when you hold the key in position or if they are on a timer.

I have mine on a 10 second timer relay.

plus can have thermometers to check engine bay temp. stay on longer if cold.. turn off earlier is warmer, etc.

probably get some that are all comp controlled now based on emissions.

essentially I am putting a non standard ignition switch back to a standard one - with eff all knowledge - and figuring out which leads go where, I have identified which terminals are live and when so some things like the starter are obvious but others aren't. the car was originally petrol but converted to diesel along the way and fiddled with so the electrics don't follow either a petrol or diesel standard diagram


terminal 2 on the back is only live in positions 3 and 4 of ignition, i.e. where you hold it in place and 4 where you activate the starter. so I was guessing the lead to the glo plug resistor on the bulkhead might go to position 2 since that is when it is needed.

They will only work when you hold the key in that position on the spring prior to engaging the ignition fully and thus turning over the engine.

hi, you posted whilst I was editing , so the lead to the plug resistor on the bulkhead needs to go on position 2 it shouldn't be on a terminal that is still live when the key has fallen back after starting

I should add the ignition switch I bought is the genuine 5 terminal one with steering lock from lrseries.com

Definitely not, they will burn out in no time if it is.. I am afraid I replaced mine with the upgraded version as I just kept blowing them even after a few seconds.

thx chaps, don't know what version mine are, think they still work as holding the key does make a difference in winter
