I would also suggest Ciderman that as this was in 1983, most complaints about the engine would be about the pre-1980 3 bearing crank, which often snapped under heavy loads. Suffix V plates and on used the vastly superior 5 bearing model. So I would concede pre-1980 engines had a weak spot, but don't write off the engine as a whole.
 
I'm on my 5th series 3. All but one of them was a 2 1/4 diesel. I love the engine, it's simple and reliable. Yes it's underpowered in modern traffic but it will run and run with little maintainence. I love the smoke from a cold start and the uneven running. I hate the idea it's 2k to buy a fully reconditioned engine.
 
well yes its underpowered,and its slow,but most of them have been worked to death,and bearly serviced in thair whole life,so if you take that into consideration,and good lump,with new parts,camshaft,followers,lifters,pushrods,rockergear,valves,rings and shells, along with a recon injector pump,and injectors,with all these suggested enhancements would probably pull alrite,my 2.25 diesel pulls my rrc diffs along with 7.50 tires,but it dies on hills,but then my engine is pretty worn,and has been abused,okay its had rings shells,and head gasket done,but a good lump,would probably be a good old lump,if set up right! :)

I'm on the project to get a LR in the future. (on a budget :D ) I see a lot of them sold with the 2.25 diesel. Would it make any sense to try to figure the acceleration/usability by comparing the weight/hp ratio to my present commuter which is a wholly different ballpark? (swift 1.0... :p ) the small swift has 750kgs and about 50 horses. often I feel that the power is not enough. (but is drinks 6L lpg. :D ) Possibly it's only in my head though, because with a 1.3 ton 88 under my ass I will not give a damn about the aggressive black Audi 20 centimetres behind me.... (mind the fact that where I live, the road-intelligence is waaaaay way behind that of the UK...)

20 mpg or less if you get the revs above 2000 ;)
 
actually I thought it over...
I used to drive an LDV400 camper with all the stuff inside. Pots, socks, books, you name it. That had a 2.5 non turbo engine (car was 1990) and I did not mind its nonexistent dynamics... I have no idea of it's weight, (hi-top LWB, double wheels at the back. :p 2tons with all **** inside? 2.2? ) but I found the power of the engine: 72 bhp.
I guess the diesel series can beat that in dynamics. :D

On the other hand... is the diesel more economical than the petrol? Ok, nothing beats a petrol running on LPG I know that, but do you have some figures?
 
If you factor in the cost of gas installation and then the hassle factor of bits breaking, additional servicing required, less power than petrol and you might not think gas is such a good move unless you do more than 25k miles a year!

Probably the best post I've ever read on here :cool::cool::cool: you just can't beat KISS engineering. The old 2 1/4 diesel just needs a few moments from cold to warm up a little, the uneven running is just saying 'give me a minute or two and I'll be ready for work'
 
I also love my 2.25 Diesel! It has character and is very reliable. I use Rotella 5w-40 Synthetic oil which helps a lot. The smoke from the exhaust helps kill the mosquitoes around here in the summer!! Though when I cross into the US (it is 10 minutes from home) they nearly always ask me if the Landy is legal in Canada because of the Diesel and Right hand drive??
