clear this up :)

So new battery on, car starts, happy days. Next morning car doesn't start again!!

You drove it around all day, running lights, radio and all sorts of leccy stuff?

The multi meter is reading 14.05 volts with the engine running of the battery and off the back of the alternator (with out lights, radio ect on)

The battery is reading 12.66 volts with the engine off.

you tested the voltage from the rear of the alt and it gave 14v at idle?

you tested the voltage from the battery terms 14v at idle?

Engine off, new battery is 12.66 volts?

So, unless i'm being a big thicky.. then why

Well changed the starter motor took it for a 20mile drive, still no charge getting taken up by the battery

If it's getting 14v at the battery terms when the engine is on.. then it's being charged from the alt. :)

Yep 2 brand new good quality battery's now. Never had a problem with these type before

But it doesn't seam to be holding that charge

Why are you thinking that? It does take a lil while to charge a flat battery.. anyway a simple test to see if it's the battery or something draining it is to discon the battery at night.

Engine off, discon battery, wait a bit for the charge to settle, measure. get up in the morning.. measure. :)

Done that already I have a fully charged battery that I have been using to start and then putting my normal brand new battery back on, it's not the batters

Sorry, I should of said I can't jump it, I can only get it started by putting a fresh battery on it

I don't understand this at all. I don't see why it should make a difference. + to +, donor neg pole to engine block.

I'm guessing that it hasn't anything to do with that and maybe there is a dodgy connection to the starter.

Drive to Halfords, and ask them to test ya battery and ya alt. I did yesterday Main battery Varta 70ah 580CCA is fooked me secondary/accessory yellow top Battery is fooked. :( and the 100ah 750CCA monster trasctor battery is good... :D

if your sure it's not the batteries, then it does sound like you have a short. You should be able to leave the new battery in and discon it whenever you turn the engine off :D at least until you find the drain.

oh what a surprise... Halfrauds tell you something they sell new one's of, is broken, so, you need a new one...

Excuse my skeptasisim - but - i think i'll do my own testing :D

If they use a piece of Calibrated Bosch Test equipment that has a printout - how are they going to fiddle that? It aint just some erk saying "yu need a new one, mate". If in doubt, get the printout and take it somewhere else . Yu dont have to buy from them!

Right I've disconnected the starter wiring from the battery so the only wire on the pos is the ones going to to electrics in the cab. Still getting a reading of 12.17 after taking all the fuses out and all the relays either side of passenger and drivers foot well. Are there any more I don't know about. I've also done the one under the bonnet on the passengers side

sorry man, I don't understand what you are doing.

are you trying to find a short / parasitic load? If so you stick your multimeter inline between the ground batt term and clamp and read it the current in amps. Ign off.
