I've noticed that my defender gearbox is stiff in the cold and has been getting worse as the temperature drops. It crunches into third gear on the second to third change to start with but this goes away after driving for a few minutes.

Today I had to scrape the ice of the car this morning and this evening. In the morning everything was normal, however this evening I got in the vehicle and I could hardly get her into gear. I struggled massively at every gear change and tried double clutching but nothing worked. At times I would have to pull up at the side of the road to find a gear before setting off again. It eased up a little during the 15 minute journey, but not a vast amount.

Any ideas on what this could be and why?

Seeing as this could cost you a mahooosive amount of money if left unchecked I'll tell ya

When was the last time yopu changed or checked your gear box oil level?

T'would be nice if you'd introduce your sen proper though including piccies  :p :D :D :D

I only bought it a couple of months ago from Rugged Guide. I'll check with them. Just have to leave it parked up for now.

Always wanted a landy. Traded in my mondeo estate to fulfil my boyhood dream. Couldn't be happier.

Ah!!

In that case I thoroughly recommend you check the level and condition of all fluids.
Not that I have any doubt about Rugged Guides integrity just something I'd tell anyone to do who has just bought a Landy ;)

Defo check an make sure it's ATF sometimes people fill with hear oil or whatever they have and that has similar symptoms however it getting worse does not sound good!

Mine does it in the really cold weather, oil level fine, I reckon its were the oils gone thick through the cold, after about 15 mins it's ok.

As already said its normally caused by the wrong oil in the box.
ATF or MTF is the order of the day for the R380 box.
I use ATF as its cheaper and more readily available than MTF.

Just had someone take a good look at it. Appears it is the hydralic pump at the top of the clutch pedal that is faulty, leaking fluid slowly.

Thanks for all the ideas and help

Clutch master cylinder problem wouldn't allow the clutch to fully disengage - which would make gear selections difficult.

Glad you got to the bottom of the problem :)
