Finding myself needing some new parts for my Disco 2 "1999"
Without ACE and being a bit broke I ask the question

"What must not be sacrificed when buying parts for a cheaper alternative?"

Parts I need:

Fuel Filter

Roll bar bushes (are poly bushes really worth the extra?)

Ball/joint assembly linkages (huge difference between genuine and pattern)


Can you post links to parts you recommend :)

Think I'll need a set of new front coils also.
And a bit off the topic which gearbox oil is favoured by you guys?
 
Which gearbox and engine do you have? Or are we supposed to guess.... :)

Poly bushes aren't worth the effort but impress those that like the colours.

Gearbox oil for a manual box is MTF94.

For most of the parts you can have the choices between OEM, Bearmach, Britpart, Allmakes and so on, just look at Paddocks, LRSeries, Rimmer Bros and others.

Why do you need front coils? Mine are still OK after 154K miles.

For things that MUST be good, buy original. things like the propshaft donut, watts Linkage bushes, radius arm bushes and so forth. Drag link and track rods are on ebay for silly money new and not bad quality.

A lot of the original suppliers are involved these days, as obviously Land Rover aren't building new D2's any more, so they can still churn out the parts at probably a better price than they sold them to LR for.

Yeah I've been on paddocks and the others, just wanted our opinions on the matter.
The ride on my disco isn't the best, I'm going to assess it after the bushes and joint assembly's are changed on the anti-roll bar. But my coils are pretty rotted (maybe the joys of living next to the sea)

Plus the steering has a lot of play, hopefully this will tighten up a bit also.

Okay so I've found out why there's so much play in the steering! The track rod has had it, which isn't to bad a aftermarket replacements about £35.

But the big problem is the front driver side wheel bearing it's toast.
So I need to find a replacement.

I've have a quick look about and I can only see the complete hub for about £100.
Can I get just the bearing? If any of you guys have a link or a part number that would be really appreciated :)
 
Don't buy cheap wheel hubs, they last 2 minutes.

Only get the ones with Timken bearings - Island 4x4 seems to be cheapest price for them but it's over £200!

And no, the bearings are not serviceable on the hubs, people have tried and got nowhere fast.

Wow £200! That's something I just can't afford and this is something that needs doing now! My budgets probably around £100 and that's it.

Gamble it then, but I reckon you'll be fitting another before long.

Might be better getting a genuine one off a breaker.
 
A gamble would be leaving it as it is lol
I hear what your saying but it's got to be done, if it was a hobby truck and not my daily driver I'd leave it till I had the penny's.

I'll check the local breakers out though.

Up to now though it looks like a britpart replacement.

maybe it's a matter of luck though... the fact is that they are not so hard to replace and you get 12 months warranty(like for the genuine:rolleyes:) ... a friend of mine who couldnt afford the timken bought two cheap ones and they are still good after 10K KM(but mostly on road)...i'd use the timken myself as long as i can afford though
 
I'm getting reports of over 20k miles from users on the cheaper pattern parts.
To me getting a part from a breakers is a gamble too when I think about it, I mean it could have 100,000 miles on it.

I'm not endorsing them, in fact I always go for the best when I'm in a stronger financial position :(

Needs must, get the ****part hub and see how you go. All I'm saying is don't be surprised if it doesn't last anywhere near the 70-80K that a genuine part will. G'luck.
 
ive been running britpart hubs for a few years now ,seem ok to me , i wouldnt even expect a genuine one to get nearly anywhere near the ones fitted at factory when a model is no longer in production
