I am currently considering putting General SAG 750x16 (see here:

tyres on my SWB SIII Safari. Thinking is: these are very close to the originals and would give excellent off road performance. I would keep my current Avon AT's for long journies when off roading would be at minimum and use the Generals for daily stuff.

Now I am aware of some of the issues in using Crossply MT's. But I would appretiate some advice from those of you who either have or do use these or something similar. Feedback both positive and negative will be appreciated.

PS. I forgot to ask what is, perhaps, the most important question. Will they fit or would I be better getting 650's?

I had a set of these on a petrol S11A SWB on 8 spokes - look great and lift vehicle up by about 5 inches - I'm guessing your going for the crossply 7.50.
be warned they rumble like hell on the road but fab through mud, superb in snow and because they are so open tread you can go through big road floods safely.
Never had grip problems - some people dread crossplies but they held on well on the tarmac.
Watch outs include - you need tubes of course - make sure the inside on the wheels are spotless - even a sticky label can wear through a tube and also the tyres themselves wear quickly - especially when the tread gets well down - the rubber dissapears very quickly!! I reckon I got 20K miles and my vehicle is well tracked etc.

I've used them before, can't critisise them for the price. After them we went for some colways or something else that cost as much and there wasn't the difference in preformance that there was in the price!

If its any consolation, i have been using General Sag radials on my Series 3 - excellent tyres and best value I could find. The old truck came with radials, so I have had to replace with radials over the last few years.

You do need tubes. You also need a gator which fits over the rim and protects the tube from rubbing on the rim.

do you mean crossplies? I didn't think that radials needed an inner tube. The General SAG radial is far less aggressive than the crossply.

i reckon 20k miles is pretty good whatever you use.
i only get about 26k miles out of the tyres on the ford focus tdi.
