Green Oval noob here.

I thought I had a Gems 4.6 V8 in my 1996 P38 RR HSE. However it seems I have a Thor sump.

Bottom of my engine:

My question is. What are the other differences. Would be useful in case I need to get spares.

Cheers

Early one is pressed steel later one is cast alloy they are interchangeable on your car. Just get bits for a GEMS engine. Don't worry about the sump only thing you may need for that is gasket and they are both same part.. You could try sorting the oil leak though.

Lets get it running first :D

What are the front crank seals like on these. Pain in the arris, or fairly straight forward.

Well I have stripped the engine out of a 4.0 V6 Ford Explorer (the same Cologne V6 4.0 of the Disco 3) and replaced all the timing chains and tensioners with success. Even made my own engine locking kit to do the job. Might be able to do a front crank seal. Just wondered if it is a day job or weekend job lol.

A morning not a lot more. ;).

Saint V8 has done an excellent HOW TO when he was sorting his gems oil pump, explains all in there, but as Wammers has said its not difficult, done mine on my Thor took no more than a couple of hours.
